Alpha:
Dinner was delicious as expected. Xavier was so luck to have a chef like Lidia. After we finished our meal Marvin showed Zarik to his room where he retired for the night.
I got up from the table and headed towards the stairs when Xavier stopped me. “Alpha, would you mind accompanying me to my office? I have something to discuss with you.”
I wasn’t sure what it could be. We’ve gotten along surprisingly well today. “Of course.”
The second we were in his office Xavier locked the door and gave me a serious look before heading to his desk.
“I’m not in trouble am I,” I asked with a laugh.
“No. This is information regarding the Sivika Case,” he said, as he sat at his desk. He gestured to the chair across from him. “Please, take a seat. Edgar dropped off some notes while we were out. I wanted to look them over with you.”
I eagerly took a seat and glanced at some of the pages he placed on the table. Some were battle tactics during the war. There was list of items taken, as well as buildings destroyed that have since been renovated, which included the Archive Library, a wing of Fire pack Headquarters, and miscellaneous businesses throughout main street.
“It seems that Gamma Dave didn’t have any information on the Sivika’s having any children. Could it be a rumor,” I asked.
“It’s possible, but they could have tried to hide it because they didn’t want anyone to attack their family.”
“Are there any archives on rogues or the rogue lands?”
“Only the ones that have attacked. I looked into their file, but there isn’t much written about them. Just some basic knowledge about the war where they attempted to overthrow my father.”
“Based on his notes, it doesn’t seem that there was any information on them prior to the attack. Is it normal for a clan to go under the radar, despite their influence in the Rogue Lands?”
“Not usually, but most clans aren’t sly enough to start a war against a pack. They’re probably cunning enough to hide. They also had lots of allies among many of the clans in the Rogue Lands.”
“What if they were working with someone from the inside?”
Xavier looked up from the papers he was studying. “You think it was a conspiracy against my family?”
“I wouldn’t rule it out. Most rogues don’t have any interest in the politics of a pack. If the Sivika’s were trying to remove the current rulers, maybe someone from within wanted to take charge of the pack. Did any of the members of your family have a problem with anyone?”
“Not that I know of. I’ll stop by Aunt Sophia’s and see if she knows anything. She didn’t take part in the war, but she’s been around long enough to know who might have tried to take over.”
Xavier sighed and rubbed his eyes before glancing at the clock on the wall. “It’s getting pretty late. Let’s call it a night. I’ll walk you to your room.”
Before he reached the door I called after him. “Xavier? Before we go to bed. I have a confession to make.”
He turned to me with his full attention. I felt embarrassed. I had never made a confession before, but it couldn’t wait. I had to do it now, before I lost my nerve.
“Xavier, I’ve been holding back from you and that’s not fair. I’m trying so hard to stay away from you, but we are fated together. And I don’t want to run anymore.” I paused and looked at him. I’m afraid any second he’ll burst out laughing at my lame attempt to confess to him.
When I saw the curiosity in his eyes, I continued, “I’m going to try. Really try. I’m sorry I’ve been pulling away from you. I wasn’t expecting this. I just wanted to go to the Alpha Summit and prove my worth. Then I found my mate. I never thought I’d find one, especially one that was an Alpha. Now I’m not only concerned for my pack, but yours as well. If we can make this work, we should. For our packs. It’s part of out duty to mate and support each other.”
I looked into Xavier’s stormy eyes, hoping he felt the same way. “I’m not going to hold back from you anymore.”
Xavier:
I continued to stare at the sincerity in Alpha’s eyes. This woman seemed to have me mesmerized once again! The fact that she could push her concerns to the side and jump into the deep end was endearing. She deserved the same attempt.
“I agree to do the same. Let’s set up some guidelines. The first, no discussing how this will work, we’ll just go by our feelings. Trying to plan everything out will just complicate things.”
I let that sink in and Alpha nodded in agreement. “The second, we’ll always be honest with each other. No secrets: we need to be able to trust eachother if we’re going to be mates.”
“I agree.”
“And the third, no marking until the end of the ten days when we have discussed everything. We had a close call last night and we don’t need another. It would force our fates together and that wouldn’t make for a very strong bond.”
I took a deep breath. “And since we are going to be completely honest with each other I have something I’d like to tell you.”
She looked up at me with concern in her eyes. I hated being vulnerable. I was never one to share my inner thoughts or feelings, and now I was about to do so with the woman that could be my downfall.
“When I was fighting the group of rogues in the woods I wasn’t angry at you for intervening… I was frightened that you would get hurt.”
I could see the realization in her eyes. I reached up and held her cheek in my palm. I didn’t want to hold back anymore. Now that we promised each other we wouldn’t, I was going to let her know how I felt every minute.
I placed my forehead to hers and inhaled her sweet scent and exhaled contently. “I couldn’t bare it if you had gotten hurt under my protection, or worse killed. To never be able to see you again before I even got to know you… It’s a fate worse than death.”
I didn’t give Alpha a chance to respond. I gently touched my lips to hers and slowly kissed her. She responded to me immediately. I couldn’t help, but release a groan as she pulled me closer. I could feel her restrain release as her lips continued to move against mine.
It felt like a weight being lifted off my shoulders. Finally, I could kiss her freely, no longer holding back. I placed my hand on the back of her head, as my tongue began to explore her mouth.
Alpha didn’t skip a beat as her tongue moved in sync with mine. I could feel myself stiffen as our kiss grew deeper. I pressed her against me, so she knew the effect she had on me. She whimpered as my erection pressed against her and I could feel her kiss getting hungrier. As much as I wanted to continue I pulled away from her.
She panted and stared at me. Her eyes were filled with confusion and arousal. “Why- why did you stop?” She looked down sheepishly and bit her lip. Her cheeks turned bright red before she quietly said, “I didn’t want you to stop.”
I took her chin and tilted her head up. “I had to stop, otherwise I would take you right here on my desk.” Her eyes widened at my comment, but I could see curiosity they held. “I’m trying not to scare you by moving too quickly. I want to take things slowly, Alpha.”
Alpha smiled up at me. “You could never scare me Xavier.”
“I don’t know how to control myself around you yet. You keep drawing me in, and before I know it I’m doing things without thinking.”
“I feel the same way, Xavier.” Unexpectedly, Alpha pulled me in for a tight hug and buried her face in my chest. “Can I just hold you for a bit?”
I could tell by the sound of her voice that her cheeks must be bright pink. I chuckled and wrapped my arms around her. “Anything for my mate.”
She sighed. I could feel her content mimic my own. We have been trying so hard to change our destiny, but we knew we couldn’t run away from it.
I’m ready to face it head on. I will try to be the mate that Alpha deserves. I don’t want to run away from her anymore.
