This brought little comfort, because that still meant the driver had stopped and gotten out. By this time it dawned on Levi that this person must have heard the same warning from Roy and Cliff, because there was no other way to get here except passed the back hoe by the convenience store. Yet the person had gotten out. Why? Maybe he thought Roy and Cliff were playing a joke and needed to take a leak so bad he chose to risk it. Of course, that was it, Levi concluded, feeling some relief at last. Still, just to be sure, “Is anybody out there?” he called. The trees muffled his voice, seemed to swallow it.
