Chapter 9On their way back to the White House, Sukova found himself thinking again about that conversation with his friend the British Ambassador. After the appalling events of 9/11, he had hoped for and expected a national soul-searching, as the American people tried to work out what had caused others to hate them so much. Indeed, he and others had tried to open up that debate and lead it forward. The exact opposite had happened. Shaken to their roots by the first serious attack on their country since Pearl Harbor, Americans turned in on themselves, and the resulting patriotic fervour denied his best efforts to mount a serious discussion about the causes behind the attack.
