The darkness was absolute, punctuated only by the faint glow of her phone on the bedside table. She groggily opened her eyes, disoriented, as the shrill ringtone pierced the silence. 5:00 AM. “Who could be calling at this ungodly hour”? Meg thought
She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and reached for the phone, squinting at the screen. A smile of realization spread across her face as she saw his name: Alex.
""Hey,"" she mumbled, trying to shake off the sleep.
"Hey, sleepyhead,"" Alex's voice was bright and cheerful, a stark contrast to her groggy state. "I know it's early, but I couldn't sleep. "I just wanted to hear your voice and also check up on you." he said.
She sat up in bed, running a hand through her tangled hair. "You're courting me hard, aren't you?" she teased, trying to sound more awake than she felt. Because, since they knew each other, he noticed she had trust issues with guys and tried walking into her heart no matter how hard she tried resisting he unknowingly walked in.
Alex chuckled. "Maybe a little. But seriously, I just missed you. "How's your day going to be?" he asked.
“The same as usual” she answered clearly, with no trace of sleep in her voice.
They chatted for a while, exchanging sweet nothings and laughter. As they talked, the darkness outside began to recede, and the world started to feel more alive. Her sleepiness slowly gave way to warmth and affection and her voice began to soften unknowingly.
"Thanks for calling," she said, feeling a slight flutter in her chest. "You always know how to wake me up in the best way."
Alex's voice was soft and gentle. "Anytime, love. Sleep tight, and I'll talk to you soon."
As she hung up and settled back into bed, a smile still lingered on her face."" 5:00 AM wasn't so bad after all" she murmured and without her knowledge, she started looking up to five o'clock every day.
