Chapter 2

“Is that so? There’s news online?” He had just checked the entertainment news while waiting for Yun Yu downstairs, but he didn’t see any news about Lu Jue. Yun Yu thought for a moment, then shook his head, placing his phone face down on his lap. “No, I was just making it up.” The restaurant required reservations. It seemed Yun Yu really wanted to eat here. When they arrived, Gu Lin found out that Yun Yu had already booked a table in a more secluded corner. When ordering, Yun Yu chose two dishes that weren’t too expensive and ate them very cleanly. For Gu Lin, these two dishes cost half a month’s salary. Yun Yu didn’t want to waste a single bit. Halfway through the meal, Yun Yu smiled at Gu Lin, saying it was delicious and thanking him. Gu Lin instantly felt no regret about the expense. After finishing, Gu Lin received a call. One of his artists was at the office looking for him. Among the few artists under his management, only Yun Yu didn’t have an assistant. Unless it was necessary for work, Gu Lin wouldn’t personally pick people up or treat them to meals. He hung up the call and glanced at the time. “I’ll drop you off at the dormitory first. I need to go back to the office.” “I can take a taxi back, Brother Gu. No one will recognize me anyway.” Yun Yu put on his hat and mask, leaving only his beautiful eyes visible, staring straight at Gu Lin. Gu Lin felt a jolt in his heart, thinking it was a good thing he wasn’t into men. He coughed, not insisting further. “Alright, I’ll go then. I’ll send your luggage over later.” Yun Yu nodded. After Gu Lin paid and left, Yun Yu looked around, then called a waiter, asking to be led to a room upstairs. As they entered the elevator, the waiter glanced at him several times. The guests on this floor were either wealthy or influential. This guest was clearly new. The man who ordered the food earlier seemed a bit nervous, but this one... he was exceptionally handsome, like a star, and somewhat familiar, but the waiter couldn’t place where he had seen him before. Yun Yu didn’t pay attention to the waiter’s gaze. Once in the elevator, he lowered his head, looking at his phone, opening the chat app, and sending a message to the contact labeled “Lu Jue”: I’m coming up now. Not long after, Lu Jue replied: The door is open. The waiter only accompanied him to the elevator. After getting off, Yun Yu found the room himself. There weren’t many people on this floor. The corridor was empty. Yun Yu breathed a sigh of relief, feeling as if he, who wasn’t famous at all, had experienced the fear of being chased by paparazzi. Earlier, he had been checking if there were any paparazzi around. Naturally, no paparazzo would bother with a little-known actor like him. Lu Jue’s room door was indeed unlocked. Yun Yu entered and immediately locked it, but he didn’t see Lu Jue inside. He only heard the sound of water from the bathroom. He glanced at the bathroom. The frosted glass door faintly revealed the silhouette of someone inside. He quickly averted his gaze, wandering aimlessly around the room. Lu Jue had just returned from abroad and had only recently checked in. Many things in the room were untouched. A t-shirt was thrown on the sofa, and a laptop was on the coffee table. The laptop screen was still on, displaying a script. Yun Yu glanced at the document name. It should be the script for Lu Jue’s new movie, as mentioned by Gu Lin. He didn’t look closely. The water in the bathroom stopped. Yun Yu instinctively looked toward the bathroom door. Lu Jue walked out, wrapped only in a towel, water dripping from his body, revealing his well-built muscles, covered with various scars from filming. Lu Jue had a very recognizable face, with handsome features and deep-set eyes. He was the “King of Acting” Lu Jue, as described by Gu Lin. Seeing Yun Yu sitting on the sofa, looking at his computer, Lu Jue raised an eyebrow, not surprised. As he was about to walk over, Yun Yu reached behind him, throwing the t-shirt Lu Jue had taken off. His ears turned slightly red as he scolded, “Why didn’t you get dressed before coming out?” “You didn’t tell me you’d arrive so soon.” The t-shirt landed on the floor. Lu Jue picked it up, tossing it into the laundry basket in the bathroom. He then found another t-shirt from his open suitcase and put it on, glancing at Yun Yu, who avoided eye contact. “It’s not like you haven’t seen it before. We’re old married folks, still shy?” Yun Yu: “……” What hadn’t he seen... Although he and Lu Jue had been married for over two years, Lu Jue was always busy with work. They had met only a handful of times in those two years. He hadn’t seen much. Yun Yu opened his mouth, firmly refuting, “I haven’t seen it.” “Is that so? Then you’ve seen it now. Do you want to see more?” Lu Jue didn’t seem to think anything was wrong, smiling as he spoke. Clearly, he was doing it on purpose. “No.” Yun Yu didn’t want to deal with him anymore. Seeing him approach, he moved to the side. “Have you told Grandfather about your return? He called me a few days ago, asking when you’d be home.” The grandfather Yun Yu referred to was Lu Jue’s own grandfather. After their marriage, Yun Yu had become closer to Lu Jue’s grandfather, at least more than to Lu Jue. They occasionally talked on the phone. Lu Jue sat down next to Yun Yu, leaning casually against the sofa, one hand holding his phone, scrolling through messages. “Haven’t had the chance yet. I came straight here after landing.” Lu Jue sat a bit too close. Yun Yu could smell the scent of his shower gel. He glanced at him, not moving away, just saying, “Oh.” “What does ‘oh’ mean? You sound like you don’t trust me?” Yun Yu indeed didn’t trust him. Coming straight from the airport to see him was impossible. Yun Yu’s eyelids flickered. He got up, took a bottle of water from the mini-fridge, drank a few sips, and returned to the sofa, sitting a bit farther from Lu Jue. He didn’t look at Lu Jue, his gaze falling back on the laptop. Slowly, he said, “Just ‘oh.’ Did you go anywhere else? How did you know I was here?” Though they were married, it was a family-arranged marriage. They had no emotional foundation, meeting for the first time just a few days before the wedding. Afterward, they rarely saw each other, with no opportunity to develop feelings. They never reported their schedules to each other. Logically, Lu Jue shouldn’t know he was here for a shoot. This place wasn’t exactly close to the airport, and Lu Jue wouldn’t have come here just to see him. Yun Yu suddenly thought of what Gu Lin said about Su Chen. He glanced at Lu Jue, seeing that Lu Jue wasn’t paying attention, and looked away. Lu Jue often talked nonsense. There was no need to take his words seriously. But if it was related to Su Chen, Yun Yu couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable. “I saw your schedule online.” Lu Jue handed over his phone. Yun Yu looked. On the phone screen was the pinned announcement on his super topic, stating he was currently shooting this drama. The shooting location was easily found online. Seeing him look, Lu Jue smiled, moving closer, one hand resting on the sofa back, leaning down to ask, “Do you believe me now?” Yun Yu’s super topic had very few fans, far fewer than even a fraction of Lu Jue’s. As Lu Jue took back his phone, Yun Yu noticed a red thumbs-up on the likes. Probably a small account Lu Jue used. Believe or not, what did it matter? Yun Yu’s eyelids flickered. “Why do you care about my schedule?” “In case I need to find you urgently,” Lu Jue said, not seeming to care. They rarely contacted each other. Was there something urgent today? Yun Yu frowned, looking up at Lu Jue. “Is there something at home that needs your attention?” Nothing else could be more urgent. Yun Yu’s acting skills were poor, but his eyes were truly beautiful, especially when he looked at someone. Noticing Lu Jue looking at his eyes, he subconsciously touched his eyelids. When he let go, he saw Lu Jue’s lips curve slightly, saying lightly, “Nothing today. Just wanted to see you after a long time, so Grandfather doesn’t scold me for not being home.” Yun Yu: “……” “If there’s nothing else, I’ll go home. I don’t want to be photographed.” Using this reason, Yun Yu sent a message saying “get here fast” and had no patience to continue. “In such a hurry? Don’t want to see me?” Lu Jue laughed, sounding casual, not at all like a mature man in his thirties. Yun Yu was even more convinced he had made a mistake. Back then, Yun Yu’s father asked him to choose a partner from among the aristocratic families. Yun Yu knew losing marital freedom was the price of being born with a silver spoon. He didn’t have a strong desire to marry for love, and obediently chose Lu Jue from the group. Because Lu Jue was the most handsome, appearing mature, steady, and reserved in photos, which was the type Yun Yu liked. Yun Yu had also seen his movies and knew he was a great actor, which was a plus for Yun Yu, who loved acting. In reality, Lu Jue’s personality was completely different from what Yun Yu imagined. Yun Yu stood up, glancing at Lu Jue, showing no respect. “No, remember to reimburse my taxi fare.” Lu Jue didn’t stop him, as if he really came just to “see him.” Yun Yu glanced at the ten thousand yuan transfer notification, huffed, and wrapped himself tightly, leaving the hotel. Back home, Yun Yu received another message from Lu Jue. Lu Jue sent a voice message, asking, “Want to act in a movie?” Yun Yu was confused and replied with a single word: No. He couldn’t even act well in TV dramas. What right did he have to act in a movie? But Lu Jue’s question reminded Yun Yu that he had asked if Lu Jue had gone anywhere else, and Lu Jue hadn’t answered. Sitting on the sofa, Yun Yu squinted, thinking for a while, then switched back to their chat. Nothing to ask. Asking too much would make it seem like he was checking up on him. He and Lu Jue weren’t at that level. As for Lu Jue’s movie, who he wanted to cast was his business, none of Yun Yu’s concern. After switching back, Yun Yu noticed the group chat had been active in his absence. Su Chen had joined the group. The staff and key actors welcomed him. Su Chen’s note was changed to Du Yu, the name of the character Yun Yu was playing. Yun Yu scrolled through the messages, still not receiving any notice from the crew. Seeing the lively conversation, even the director was talking to Su Chen. Yun Yu immediately @ the director, asking: [Director, why wasn’t I informed about being replaced?] Perhaps not expecting him to ask directly in the group, it was quiet for a while before someone responded. It was Su Chen.
