The whole world seemed to stop turning for Elara.
The Lycan King whose very name made every wolf tremble in fear now knelt before her. The weight rolling off him was so vast the air grew heavy as if pressed down by a thousand years. Yet there was no malice in it at all. Only a longing so deep it hurt to breathe, and a reverence no words could ever truly hold.
Valerius lifted his face slowly. His silver eyes glowed soft through the dark, looking far past her skin and bone as if staring at something lost long ago. He did not speak of fate or the past right away. He only paused, stilling the tremor running through his fingers pressed to the frozen earth. The broken crescent moon ring on his hand throbbed faint, beating in time with every beat of her heart.
“They do not know what they have cast aside,” his voice rumbled deep. It did not reach her ears alone. It settled straight into her soul. “They rejected you because they are too small to see what stands before them.”
Elara stepped back. Her heart raced not with fear, but with a confusion that wrapped tight around her chest. She was nothing but a girl thrown away. Called weak. Left to die. Yet the oldest most powerful being alive bowed to her as if she were the last sacred thing left in this world.
“Why?” she asked clear and steady. “Why do you do this? I am no one. I am only the girl rejected in front of everyone and chased out to die alone.”
Valerius rose slowly. He towered over her, blocking part of the red moon above. But his gaze never threatened. He held out one hand gentle as if reaching for something most fragile and most precious on earth. His fingers shook just for a moment before he mastered himself again.
“In time you will understand,” he said simply. No empty promises. “Not yet.”
He did not force her. He only gestured for her to follow him away from the forest edge where the scent of the Blackwood pack still lingered. As they walked hundreds of giant shapes parted to make way. Every head bowed low as if they worshipped the very ground she stepped on. No sound. No sudden move. Only a silence so full of respect it made the hair on her arms stand straight.
Elara looked at them one by one. Faces she had been told would tear humans apart now dared not meet her eyes. She glanced at Valerius walking beside her. His face calm yet carrying a burden no one could ever imagine.
“Are you not afraid I will hurt you?” she asked quiet.
Valerius looked at her for a heartbeat. A sad faint smile touched his lips.
“You have always been the one to protect us,” he breathed so softly the wind almost stole the words. “Not the other way around.”
Before she could ask more the wind shifted sharp and sudden. The scent of rage and despair flooded the air mixed with iron and cold sweat. Hoofbeats and wolf howls tore through the quiet from far off. Drawing closer. Growing louder every second.
Kael was coming.
Valerius stopped at once. The soft light in his eyes faded fast replaced by sharp cold tension. One small move of his hand and every Lycan that had stood still now stood tall. Fur bristling. Fangs bared. Ready to tear apart anyone who crossed the line.
Kael halted right at the edge of Valerius’s domain. His eyes blazed red as he stared hard at Elara then shifted to the King standing guard over her. Fury and panic warred in his face yet he did not shout out his truth. He glanced once toward the dark trees behind him as if terrified something watching from there would hear.
“Stand back!” Kael roared. His voice boomed but cracked near the end. “Give her back! She belongs to this pack!”
Valerius said nothing at first. He only stood still letting his presence answer for him. When the silence grew heavy enough to hurt he spoke calm and sharp enough to cut bone.
“She ceased to be yours the moment you said it yourself.”
Kael took one step forward. His grip on his sword hilt so tight the metal began to bend. His face burned with anger and a pain he could never speak aloud.
“You do not know what will happen if she goes with you! You do not know what laws you break!”
“And do you?” Valerius cut in cold and hard. “Do you truly know what you rejected tonight?”
Kael fell silent. Those words struck deeper than any silver blade. He wanted to say so much. But there were lines he could not cross. Truths that would only bring Elara to her end faster if spoken now.
Elara stood between two powers ready to break each other apart. She saw Kael shaking not just from rage. She saw Valerius calm yet worn down by centuries of weight. And for the first time she knew she was not a prize to be fought over.
“Stop this!” Elara shouted.
Her voice was not loud yet both men fell still instantly.
“I am not an object,” she said firm. Blood still ran from her temple adding fire to her gaze. “Kael you rejected me. You said I was not worthy. Why do you come now acting as if I am something you lost?”
Kael looked at her eyes full of a storm he could never let loose.
“The bond is not so easily cut,” he answered low and heavy with chosen doubt. “And I will not let anything take you.”
“I am not yours anymore,” Elara said cold and clear. “And at least he never humiliated me before thousands of people.”
She turned slowly to Valerius. He waited patient. But now she saw the ancient exhaustion hidden behind his steady gaze.
“Take me away,” Elara said certain.
Kael’s face went deathly pale.
“Elara no! You do not know what he truly is! You do not know what you are waking!”
“You never gave me the chance to know anything,” Elara shot back looking straight at the boy she had loved for ten years. “You decided it all alone.”
Valerius held out his hand once more. This time Elara took it without hesitation. The moment their skin touched the red moon above seemed to burn brighter. The crescent birthmark on her shoulder flared hot but not painful.
Kael moved to block their path. A roar from hundreds of Lycans exploded at once sending Blackwood warriors stumbling back in fear.
“You will regret this!” Kael cried out raw with true despair. “One day you will kneel and beg me to bring you back!”
Valerius did not look back. He only gripped Elara’s hand tight and walked away.
“Valerius!” Kael screamed one last time. “You know this will not end well for her!”
The King’s step faltered for a fraction of a second. His shoulder shook. But he kept walking.
And far back in the deepest shadow of the oldest trees a pair of pure golden eyes glowed dim watching them leave. A voice whispered soft and clear enough to slip into every nightmare she would ever have.
“Awake at last my little Queen… You have come home where you belong.”
