The moment Valerius’s touch met her skin something long buried woke at last. Power surged fast through every limb that had been numb. Elara stood slowly. Her legs no longer shook. Blood still dripped from her temple and torn arm yet her body felt nothing like the weakness that had held her only moments before. Before hundreds who hunted her before two men whose fates were now bound to hers she stood tall for the first time not as a girl cast down but as one who began to take hold of her own life.
Kael stared at her in disbelief. His golden eyes traced her face now free of tears and fear. There was longing held tight. There was real panic. But beneath it all lay a secret he would not speak even at the cost of his life. Again and again he glanced toward the dark woods watching as if the shadows themselves watched him back.
“You do not understand what you choose,” his voice shook half command half plea something he had never shown anyone. “If you go with him you step into a place no one leaves unchanged. You will face a shadow even I dare not name aloud.”
“And if I return to you?” Elara met his gaze straight no longer bowing as if she were the guilty one. “What would you give me? Humiliation before thousands? Fear you hide alone? Or truths you lock away even from me though I was meant to share every part of your life?”
Kael fell silent. His jaw clenched until it ground. There was no answer he could give that would not seal her fate far worse. Blood oaths he had sworn threats that would awaken if their bond held all buried deep. And most terrible of all that very threat stood among the trees waiting for one wrong word to step forward.
Suddenly the wind died completely. A silence colder than anything before settled over them. A low growl rumbled from the deepest woods yet no beast came forth. Only a weight pressing heavy on every chest. From behind the oldest tree a pair of pure golden eyes glowed faint unmoving watching.
“Whoever takes one more step,” Valerius’s voice boomed cold absolute as the oldest law of the earth, “will face what they will never live to regret.”
He moved one step forward. The power rolling off him was so great many Blackwood warriors stumbled back untouched. Kael did not flinch. He curled his hands tight veins rising on his neck. He knew if he let her go now he did not only lose his mate. He handed her into a trap laid down a thousand years before.
“Give her back!” Kael roared as light blazed and flickered around him. “She belongs to this pack! She is mine!”
Valerius did not shout back. He only looked at Kael quiet and in that look Kael saw what turned his blood to ice: pity.
“She ceased to be yours the moment you cast her out yourself,” Valerius said soft yet shattering. “And you know that better than anyone.”
Kael stumbled back. Those words cut deeper than silver. He wanted to scream to curse to explain yet an invisible hand choked every truth rising to his lips.
Then at the peak of tension the shadow that had watched all this time moved.
It did not run. It did not leap. It simply walked. Yet every step shifted the very air around them. Slowly the figure emerged robed in plain black like Valerius yet carrying a darkness that breathed on its own. His eyes were pure gold without blemish and a faint smile rested on his lips one that never reached the depth of his gaze.
The world seemed to stop. Even Valerius fell still his shoulders hardening his hands clenching tight at his sides.
“You always take too long to decide Valerius,” the man said quiet yet heard everywhere. “You always spare those who deserve none of it.”
Valerius looked at him sharp.
“Leave Azrael.”
Azrael smiled thin. He did not challenge. He did not threaten openly. He only looked at Elara long and hard as if seeing something lost and found after endless ages. It was not love. It was not reverence. It was absolute claim.
“You grew exactly as I hoped,” he said simply to her.
Elara stepped back. Her heart raced not only from fear but from something almost spoken on her tongue a name she had never known yet felt so close she nearly called it out.
Azrael turned to Kael rigid where he stood.
“Go,” one word yet it carried weight enough to make Kael’s limbs feel heavy. “Before I change my mind about what remains here tonight.”
Kael wanted to fight. But when he met those golden eyes he understood he faced not an enemy beaten by fangs or strength but something older than the pack itself.
He looked at Elara one last time full of words unsaid warnings he could not speak.
“I will come back,” he breathed only for her. “And when I do trust no one.”
With heavy steps Kael withdrew. His warriors followed stumbling afraid to look back. Silence returned save for Elara Valerius and the one whose name made even the oldest king tread carefully.
Azrael moved one step closer.
“You think his protection is enough?” he whispered right beside her ear. “Wait until you begin to remember the voices you forgot.”
Before Elara could speak or move he drifted back toward the dark.
“Keep her safe,” he said to Valerius light yet laced with challenge. “While you still can.”
Just before he vanished into shadow he looked at her one last time.
“Until we meet again my little Queen.”
That terrible silence settled once more. Elara turned to Valerius but he only stared at where Azrael had been pale and carrying a burden too heavy to speak.
“Let us go,” Valerius said at last his voice fragile beneath his strength. “Before he returns with what he truly came for.”
As they walked away Elara felt something beat strong within her chest. A name almost spoken then gone leaving only longing for something she had never held.
And deep in the dark another pair of golden eyes woke slow waiting for the moment to pull every string he had always held.
