Chapter 4

1125 Words
Elara did not scream again. The first scream had torn out of her instinctively, raw and useless against the grip on her arm. The second never came. Shock swallowed it. The man’s hand was firm but controlled, not frantic, not cruel. That terrified her more than violence would have. “Aiden!” she cried once more as she was pulled backward. He fought–she saw it. Saw the restraint snap. He shoved against security, fury breaking through years of discipline. “Let her go!” His voice cracked through the night, sharp with something dangerously close to desperation. Julian’s men moved fast. Efficient. Trained. The world fractured into sound and light–sirens, shouting, the thud of footsteps, camera flashes catching chaos like predators feeding. Elara’s heels scraped against the pavement as she was dragged toward the second car. The door opened. Cold leather. Darkness. “Aiden!” she shouted again. He was still fighting. Still reaching. Their eyes locked for one final second. In his, she saw fear–not for himself, not for reputation or legacy–but for her. Pure, unfiltered fear. The door slammed shut. The sound echoed like a verdict. The car moved immediately. Elara sat rigid, heart slamming so hard it hurt. The man who had grabbed her now sat opposite, silent, eyes forward. Another man drove. No one spoke. “Where are you taking me?” she demanded, forcing steadiness into her voice. No answer. Her fingers curled into fists in her lap. She thought of the café. Of mornings that smelled like coffee and peace. Of sketches half-finished. Of Aiden standing in the rain, asking her what she recommended, like her opinion mattered more than the world he came from. Fear crept in slowly now, cold and deliberate. She was not naive. She knew power like Julian Voss’s did not need raised voices or threats. It moved quietly. It erased gently. The car slowed. They stopped in front of a building Elara recognized instantly–Voss Tower. Glass and steel, towering, untouchable. A monument to dominance disguised as architecture. The door opened. “Elara Reyes,” the man said calmly, “Mr. Voss will see you now.” Julian Voss waited in a private office high above the city, hands folded behind his back as he stared out at the skyline. He did not turn when she was escorted inside. “You can leave,” he said to the men. The door closed. The silence was more suffocating. Elara stood her ground, heart racing but spine straight. “If this is an attempt to intimidate me, you’ve failed.” Julian turned slowly. Up close, his resemblance to Aiden was unmistakable, the same sharp features, the same controlled intensity. But where Aiden carried warmth beneath restraint, Julian was cold through and through. “This is not intimidation,” Julian said evenly. “It is containment.” Elara swallowed. “I didn’t ask to be part of your world.” “No,” Julian agreed. “You stumbled into it. And now it threatens to disrupt carefully constructed systems.” She met his gaze, anger rising. “Your son is not a system.” Julian’s eyes hardened. “My son is an asset. And assets require protection–from distraction.” “From love?” she shot back. Julian regarded her thoughtfully. “From weakness.” The word landed like a slap. “You think loving someone makes him weak?” Elara asked. “I think loving the wrong person does,” Julian replied without hesitation. “And you, Miss Reyes, are the wrong person.” Her breath caught, but she refused to flinch. “You don’t know me,” she said. “I know enough,” Julian replied. “You are ambitious but unconnected. Talented but unprotected. You have no leverage here.” Elara’s voice trembled despite her effort. “And what is it you want?” Julian stepped closer. “Distance.” She laughed, sharp and disbelieving. “You kidn*pped me to ask me to walk away?” “I brought you here,” he corrected, “to explain the consequences.” He turned, picked up a tablet from his desk, and handed it to her. Elara hesitated–then looked. Her café. Her name. Her mother’s address. Threats disguised as data. “If you remain in Aiden’s life,” Julian said calmly, “your world will no longer be… gentle.” Rage surged. “You’re blackmailing me.” Elara asked. I’m informing you, he said. “Of reality.” Silence stretched. Finally, Elara spoke, voice quiet but unbroken. “And what does Aiden want?” Julian’s jaw tightened for the first time. “Aiden does not always understand what is best for him.” “That’s not an answer.” Elara responded. Julian held her gaze. “Aiden will comply. He always does.” The certainty in his voice terrified her more than the threat. Aiden was still fighting. By the time he broke free, the second car was gone. Elara has already been dismissed from Julian's office. His hands shook as he shoved past security, shouting orders into his phone, fury blazing. “Find her,” he snapped. “Now.” His father watched him from the edge of the chaos, expression unreadable. “You crossed a line,” Aiden said, advancing on him. Julian’s voice was calm. And said son “I prevented a disaster.” “You kidn*pped her.” “I intervened.” Both exchanged words. Aiden laughed, sharp and hollow. “You don’t get to decide who I love.” Julian met his gaze steadily. “You will thank me.” said Julian. Aiden’s hands curled into fists. “If you hurt her” “I won’t,” Julian interrupted. “That depends on her choices.” Aiden froze. “What did you say?” Julian turned away. “Go home, Aiden. This ends tonight.” But Aiden knew his father well enough to hear the lie. Hours later, Elara was escorted out of Voss Tower–not harmed, not touched again, but shaken to her core. A car waited to take her home. As she stepped inside, her phone buzzed. Aiden. Her chest tightened, she opened the message. Are you safe? She stared at the screen, she kept on cleaning her nose, tears blurring the words as she continued reading them. Another message followed. Please. Tell me that you’re okay, Elara typed slowly, carefully. I’m safe. She paused. Then added. But I don’t know how we can survive this. The car pulled away. Above them, Voss Tower glowed like a watchful eye. And somewhere between love and power, a choice was being made–one that would change everything.
