“What are you doing?” Erik asked, raising his head from his pillow. “What time is it anyway?”
“It’s five-twenty and I’m taking the kids for a walk. Go back to sleep,” Ted said, sitting on the side of the bed, pulling on his socks.
Dixie and Dickie sat at his feet, tails wagging frantically, looking expectantly at the two men.
“No way! This is the first morning in months you don’t have to be at the hospital for rounds. You get back here in bed. It’s your morning to sleep in. I’ll take them.” Erik threw back the covers and started to get out of bed. “Besides, Dickie’s the one who insists on getting up with the sun. I was the one who couldn’t live without him when we went to the animal shelter looking for a dog.”
