Sovia’s POV
“Zadekiah, is this true?”
When I heard the king probing Zadekiah, everything inside me melted like ice. Then slowly, it started to burn.
It was wrong to use him like this—putting him in trouble right in front of the Moon Chapel.
I didn’t even bother to look at my parents; they must have been mortified already.
If this failed and I had to go back home, I was as good as dead.
My mother wouldn’t spare me, and my father—only the Moon Goddess knew what he was going to do.
But I caught Lydia breathing hard on her seat, clutching the sides of her chair as she bored her gaze into me.
Zadekiah didn’t say anything. He just stared at me, his face devoid of all feelings and emotions. Yet he still looked hellishly inviting in the most sickening way.
“Zadekiah! If you don’t answer me at once—forget about becoming Alpha King!”
I squeezed my palms, moving over to Zadekiah. Janova’s gaze followed as I stood in front of his brother.
The frantic pacing of my heart was too loud for me to think, or even try to stay calm. If Zadekiah didn’t accept, my plan was going to be ruined.
Janova grabbed my wrist, pulling me away from Zadekiah. “Sovia, this is not a game. Today is our wedding—our mating ceremony. What do you mean you’re pregnant?”
I pushed against the lump in my throat, forcing more tears as I turned to him. If my wolf was activated, I would speak to Zadekiah and beg the living daylights out of him.
Janova loosened his hand from mine, dragging his fingers through his hair.
A wave of whispers coursed through the walls of the Moon Chapel. The High Priestess shut her eyes, then stepped forward. “Everyone, be silent.”
The whole place went quiet. Her heels clicked against the floor.
“In all my sixty years of serving the Moon Goddess, I have never seen such impudence in this sacred temple. Your Majesty, do you take me for a joke?”
The king lowered his head, hands tucked to his sides with visible restraint.
She turned to me, her face dimmed of its initial light. “Your hand.”
“My… my hand?” I shivered, taking a step back.
The High Priestess nodded, raising her palm toward me. “I need to confirm if you’re carrying a child.”
What was I thinking, making such a bold declaration when the entire place was reeking with healers from across the werewolf territory?
“Hand!” The High Priestess snarled, her wolf eyes igniting. A strange force burned into my chest and I hissed at the discomfort.
I had heard rumors that aside from the Alpha King, the High Priestess was one of the strongest beings in the werewolf territory, blessed with divine authority from the Moon Goddess herself.
I was going to get caught.
Lying was reckless. But trying to deceive the royal family was a crime that would end with only one punishment—my execution.
Before I could speak, the High Priestess had already taken my wrist. Her cold hands wrapped around mine.
Long, taint-red nails pressed into my flesh as she frowned, checking my pulse.
I stood still, waiting for my end because this was it.
Moon Goddess above, please. I’ll do anything. If you want my wolf fur, I don’t mind sacrificing it every year once I activate my powers. Just please don’t let me die again… please, I begged, almost in tears.
The High Priestess slowly narrowed her eyes from my wrist to my eyes. They squinted hard.
I swallowed. She knew.
I'm going to die, I chanted over and over in my head.
She set my hand down, turned to the king, and gave a slight bow.
“Lady Sovia is indeed with child.”
I gasped. A hand flew to my chest as the tears building in my eyes slipped down one cheek.
My chest moved slightly as a low smile formed on my face.
“That’s bullshit!” Janova groaned, his wolf aura flaring as he marched toward Zadekiah. " Sovia is my mate. she will never betray me."
the high priestess c****d a brow. "Are you questioning me, young princes."
Janova’s nose flared, jaw locking with tension.
“No!” I rushed forward, spreading my hands protectively in front of Zadekiah.
He deserved the biggest apology right now.
I didn’t know why the High Priestess had decided to lie—because there was no way I was pregnant—but this was my chance.
Even if Zadekiah denied it, no one would believe him now.
I would spend the rest of my life making up for this sin, but I didn’t care.
“Don’t touch Zadekiah!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. “It’s not his fault.”
“Sovia, move aside. It’s obvious he took advantage of you. Don’t worry. You don’t have to cover up for this bastard.”
Zadekiah just stood there, a low smirk curving over his lips as he crossed his arms over his chest.
Murmurs in the Moon Chapel were already growing louder.
“Zadekiah didn’t take advantage of me… he’s… he’s the one I love,” I yelled.
The entire room drenched in silence the moment those words left my mouth.
“If you want to hurt him… you’ll have to get through me first.”
