Dominic suddenly coughed after hearing his grandfather's question. He wasn't thinking about marriage at all; what was on his mind right now was finding the right reason to tell his grandfather that his relationship with Gwen had ended.
Gwen felt the same way, patting her boss's back. She thought about what it would be like to marry a cold man like Dominic. She also thought about her friends' reactions when they found out she was having lunch with both bosses.
"Isn't it better to do it sooner rather than later?" Grandpa continued. "Honestly, I'm very disturbed by those rumors."
"I've told you several times, if you trust me, then you don't need to worry about those rumors," Dominic replied.
"I've been through stages of belief, doubt, then belief again. I've tried hard to explain to our clients about you, I've also turned a deaf ear to it, but that method didn't work. It seems they need to see you get married," Grandpa expressed his concern.
"There will be responses from them if I marry just to cover up those rumors," Dominic argued with his grandfather. "That's why let us date first, talking about marriage is complicated, sir."
"We'll make it easy, I'll take care of everything. Just mention the date, concept, and place you want," Grandpa suggested.
Dominic looked at Gwen with an incomprehensible gaze. Then he spoke to his grandfather again. "It seems Gwen isn't ready to get married yet, sir."
"Is that true, Gwen?"
The sudden question caught Gwen off guard. She was confused about how to answer, Mr. Charles seemed to be waiting for her response.
"Here's the thing, Mr. Charles, I have some things I still want to achieve before getting married. So I don't want to rush into marriage, besides, marriage requires con—"
The elder man interrupted her, "What are the things you want to achieve? I'll help you achieve them after you get married. Gwen, you need to become Dom's wife as soon as possible."
"Grandpa can't force Gwen like that," Dominic interjected. But instead of calming the situation, his actions made his grandfather angry, and he suddenly stormed out of the room. Gwen panicked and tried to follow, but she was stopped by her boss.
"Shouldn't we apologize, sir?"
"Let it be, if we apologize to him, Grandpa will decide on the wedding date for us," Dominic said. "Are you done eating? Can we go now?"
"Yes, sir," Gwen replied shortly. Actually, she still wanted to try other dishes, but it wasn't possible anymore. The man went to the cashier and paid for all their meals, Gwen opened her mouth in surprise when she found out the amount Dominic had to pay.
Now they were on their way back, just like before. There was no conversation between them. Gwen thought about Mr. Charles's feelings now, but something troubled her. Mr. Charles forced his grandson to marry, but he didn't ask about the background of his future granddaughter-in-law.
"My grandpa is selective, he's quite strict in choosing my partner. But since I broke up with my girlfriend and those rumors spread rapidly, he just said to marry any woman," Dominic revealed. It's like he heard Gwen's inner voice.
Of course, she was surprised to hear Dominic's recent narrative, her question was immediately answered. She felt that Mr. Charles really loved his grandson. She then repeated the question that troubled her. "So, from any background, is it allowed?"
Dominic nodded in response to Gwen's question. There were actually many other things she wanted to ask her boss, but she felt uncomfortable. Now they were almost at the office, Gwen had prepared an excuse for when her friends asked why she came in late; break time had ended an hour ago.
The car was parked again, Gwen and Dominic were waiting for the elevator. "I'm sorry I involved you," he said as he entered the elevator.
"I'm sorry I didn't help, sir. I hope the problem can be resolved quickly," she said sincerely. Dominic smiled broadly.
Luckily, when the elevator opened, there was no one inside, it could be another gossip if someone saw them coming together. They parted ways in the middle, with Gwen going to her office while Dominic went to the finance department.
As expected, Tsuri was waiting for her, her face was unpleasant to look at. "Where have you been?"
"Sorry, I was sick earlier, then I went to the health room and slept there. Sorry, I didn't tell you," Gwen lied to her boss.
"Next time you can't do that, you have to ask my permission first. And also, make sure your phone is always active so I can easily reach you," she said. After saying that, Tsuri returned to her office.
Now Gwen could breathe a sigh of relief because her boss didn't get angry at her. She sat at her desk, then charged her phone battery which had run out and caused her to be unreachable by her friends.
She tried to continue her activities although her mind was busy thinking about other things. Gwen tried to focus on her work. Time passed quickly towards the end of the workday.
Some employees started to line up for the elevator to go downstairs, but Gwen was still working on her report because Tsuri asked her to do it suddenly. Even when the office was empty, Gwen still kept working on her tasks.
"Go home, overtime isn't counted as extra pay," Dominic whispered.
"Okay, sir, I'll go home as soon as I finish this," Gwen replied without looking at her boss.
"Go home now or you'll spend the night here."
Checkmate.
There was nothing Gwen could do except tidy up her desk and turn off her computer. Luckily, her report was already finished. What surprised her was that Dominic was still there, it seemed like he was waiting for her.
Curious about Dominic's strange behavior, Gwen then asked him. "Is there something you want to—"
"No, if I go down first, you might not be able to go home, so I'll wait until you're done," Dominic explained with his masculine voice. This time he didn't look cool; instead, he was very attentive to her.
"Thank you very much," Gwen replied. She chose to go first because she was afraid Dominic would be uncomfortable if they left at the same time. But that only made Dominic angry at her. He chased after Gwen and then grabbed her hand, they now stood facing each other.
"I'm trying to approach you, but you're not responding well to me," he said. Gwen could see her boss's face holding back his anger. Unbeknownst to them, someone was secretly taking their picture and ready to spread it.
"There will be new gossip tomorrow."
