Luna

"I love you right up to the moon and back," the man in the dream whispered, his voice a warm rumble. He was handsome, strong, with a dark fedora tilted low, obscuring most of his face. But his eyes, oh his eyes, were the colour of burning embers, filled with a love so fierce it took my breath away. Then, a jarring knock on my rickety hut door shattered the dream. I sat up, heart pounding against my ribs, the lingering warmth of the dream clinging to me like a phantom touch. The harsh morning light streamed through the small window, chasing away the shadows and the dream man with them. The village elder stood on the other side of the door, his weathered face etched with concern. "Rachel? You alright in there, girl?" I scrambled to my feet, smoothing down my sleep-tousled hair. "Yes, Mr. Geras, just fine. Come in." The door creaked open, and the elder shuffled inside, the scent of pipe tobacco following him. He settled on a rickety chair by the hearth, the fire long dead. "You've been having those dreams again, haven't you?" I looked away, a blush creeping up my neck. It was no secret in the village that I had strange dreams, vivid and unsettling. Especially the ones with the handsome stranger. "Just a dream, Mr. Geras. Nothing more." He peered at me over his spectacles. "I remember the day they found you, Rachel. Just a baby, abandoned in the woods, crying your eyes out. We took you in, raised you like our own. But those dreams…" He trailed off, shaking his head. I knew what he was thinking. The dreams were different, unsettling. They felt so real, like glimpses of another life. But I couldn't tell him about the fedora-wearing man, about the burning intensity in his red eyes. "There's something else, Rachel," he began, his voice heavy. "Marriage arrangements have been made." My breath hitched. "Marriage? But why?" "Ischyros, the Alpha of the Northern Pack, has requested your hand." I felt a flicker of fear dance in my stomach. The Alphas were powerful, intimidating figures. The thought of being married to one filled me with unease. Mr. Geras placed a reassuring hand on mine. "He's a good Alpha, Rachel. Strong, fair. You'll be well looked after." The door creaked open again, and a tall figure strode in, filling the small hut with a sudden, imposing presence. Ischyros. He was even more impressive than the village whispers suggested, broad-shouldered with a commanding air. His gaze fell on me, intense and unwavering. A strange chill ran down my spine, an instinctive reaction I couldn't explain. "Welcome, Ischyros," Mr. Geras greeted, rising to his feet. Ischyros dipped his head in a curt nod. His eyes, the colour of a stormy sky, lingered on me for a moment, then flicked to the elder. "We can finalize the details later, Mr. Geras. But I can assure you, Rachel will not regret becoming my Luna." He turned to me, his features softening slightly. "The full moon approaches, my Luna. I can't wait for you to be by my side." My heart hammered against my ribs as he turned and left, leaving behind a heavy silence and the unsettling feeling that my life, as I knew it, was about to change forever. The full moon hung like a giant silver eye in the velvet sky, its cool light bathing the village in an eerie glow. Tonight was the night. Butterflies danced a frantic ballet in my stomach as I stood before the village elders, adorned in a simple white gown that felt more like a costume than anything else. The ceremony was a blur of chanting, blessings, and the uncomfortable feeling of dozens of eyes watching me. But all I could focus on was Ischyros. He stood tall and imposing across from me, his dark fur gleaming in the moonlight. A sliver of fear danced along the edge of my excitement. Finally, the ceremony reached its climax. The elders stepped back, leaving Ischyros and me alone. He took a slow step forward, his eyes burning with something that went beyond the usual Alpha possessiveness. He reached out, a single finger tracing the curve of my neck. My breath hitched as he leaned in closer. The heat radiating off his body was almost suffocating. This was it. The moment that would bind me to him as his Luna. But then, his movements stalled. His nostrils flared, and a low growl rumbled deep in his chest. "What is this?" he snarled, his voice laced with a dangerous edge. I followed his gaze to his hand, hovering inches from my skin. Confusion fluttered in my chest. "What's wrong?" "Wrong?" He roared, his voice echoing in the silent clearing. "You reek of another Alpha's scent!" Panic flooded my veins. "What? No, that can't be right!" His eyes, moments ago filled with a possessive hunger, now burned with a cold fury. "You've been marked, claimed by another. You dare stand here as an offering, already tainted?" My heart hammered against my ribs. "But I… I don't understand!" He lunged forward, his alpha aura pressing down on me like a physical weight. "A filthy deception! You will pay for this!" He grabbed my arms, his grip like iron. Terror choked back my scream. "Ischyros, please! I don't know what you're talking about!" His face twisted in rage. "Silence, Luna of lies! You will answer for this transgression." His breath smelled of smoke and fury. "You will answer with your life." The world blurred as he lifted a massive hand, claws extended, a glint of moonlight on their razor-sharp edges. This couldn't be happening. This dream turned nightmare couldn't end like this. Just as his hand descended, a voice cut through the tense silence. "Ischyros, wait!" It was Damon, another Alpha, his voice sharp with urgency. "There must be a mistake!" But Ischyros seemed deaf to reason. His eyes, blazing with fury, were fixed on me. "This is between me and my... marked Luna." The last thing I saw before darkness claimed me was the glint of those murderous claws.
