Chapter FiveThe Marquis was well aware by the expression on Lucy’s face that she had something important to tell him.
“I must speak to you alone,” she whispered after luncheon.
He wondered what was making her look so happy.
She had not been seated next to him during the meal because one of the guests was the Lord Lieutenant’s wife, who had to be on his right and the Countess, as was correct in precedence, was on his left.
It had been for the Marquis a rather boring two hours, because the Lord Lieutenant’s wife was a dictatorial woman who voiced her opinions insistently and had no wish to be contradicted by anyone.
He therefore found himself thinking of what Ina had said to him yesterday and it still annoyed him because it made him, he found, critical of everything that was happening.
