Shadows Of Doubt

728 Words
Ava's mind was racing as they left the restaurant. She couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. The girl's words kept echoing in her mind: "Don't trust her. Or anyone." As they walked, Ivana chatted casually, but Ava's responses were monosyllabic. She was preoccupied with her doubts. When they got back to the house, Ava excused herself, citing fatigue. Ivana nodded understandingly, but Ava noticed a flicker of concern in her eyes. As Ava locked herself in her room, she began to snoop around. She searched for any clues that might reveal Ivana's true identity or intentions. That's when she stumbled upon a small notebook hidden in the drawer. The notebook belonged to Ivana. Ava's eyes widened as she flipped through the pages, finding cryptic notes and codes. One entry caught her eye: "Keep A. in the dark." Ava's heart sank. Who was Ivana, really? And what did she want from her? Ava knew she had to be careful. She couldn't trust anyone, not even her own instincts. She needed concrete evidence. Ivana stood in the kitchen, her voice barely above a whisper as she received a mysterious call. Ava, observing from the hallway, couldn't make out the words, but Ivana's tone sent shivers down her spine. Ava's face remained expressionless as she retreated to the living room. She cleared her throat to announce her presence. "Ivana, can I ask you something?" Ivana turned around, a hint of concern on her face. "Of course, Ava. What's on your mind?" "Where are my family?" Ava asked, her voice firm. "Didn't I have other friends or relatives?" Ivana's expression changed from concern to curiosity. "Ava, did you remember something?" Ava shook her head. "No, I'm just asking. But if I do remember anything, I'll tell you first." Ivana's eyes narrowed slightly, and she smiled. "Of course, Ava. We'll figure everything out together." As the day drew to a close, Ava noticed Ivana sneaking out of the house in a black covered outfit. She followed Ivana's path until it disappeared into the bushy terrain. That night, Ava's dreams were haunted by visions of Jeff. She thrashed about, her voice barely audible. "Let me go, Jeff... Jeff, don't die... Our baby's alive... Help!" Her screams pierced the night, and she woke up with a start, panting and disoriented. It was just a dream, she told herself. But the memories lingered, refusing to fade away. Ava's determination grew. She would uncover the truth about her past, about Jeff, and about Ivana's secrets. But how? As she sat up in bed, she noticed a piece of paper on her nightstand. It was a note, scribbled in haste: "Meet me at the old oak tree at midnight. Come alone." Ava's confusion deepened as she read the note. Who could have written it, and what did they want? Despite her reservations, curiosity got the better of her. She decided to follow the instructions and meet the mysterious individuals. At the old oak tree, Ava saw the back of a female and a male. "Who are you?" she demanded. The pair turned around, their faces obscured by shadows. "No need to know," the female replied, her voice husky. The male stepped forward. "You really made a mistake by entering the memory store room, Ava." Ava's eyes widened. "What do you mean? What memory store room?" The female chuckled. "No need to rush. You'll get to know later." The male handed Ava a small paper. "This will help you regain a bit of your memory." Ava took the paper, her heart racing. As soon as the pair disappeared into the darkness, she unfolded the paper. It was a photograph of a familiar place – the building where she had been investigating. When Ava arrived home, Ivana was back, seemingly none the wiser. Ava quickly hid the paper, her mind reeling with questions. What was the memory store room? And what memories was she supposed to uncover? As she lay in bed, Ava's fingers traced the edges of the photograph. She felt a spark of determination. She would uncover the truth, no matter what secrets Ivana or anyone else was hiding. With the photograph clutched in her hand, Ava drifted off to sleep, her subconscious working overtime to piece together the puzzle of her past. But little did she know, she was being watched...
