The message changed everything.
By the next morning, Naomi Blake felt tension everywhere.
In the hallways.
In the elevators.
In every lingering stare from coworkers.
Even the security cameras mounted around Sinclair Group suddenly felt threatening now.
Careful, Naomi. Offices have cameras.
She had barely slept after receiving the text.
Because whoever sent it clearly knew something.
Or at least suspected enough to be dangerous.
Naomi stepped out of the elevator slowly that morning, gripping her coffee tighter than necessary.
The executive floor already buzzed with activity, but something about it felt different today.
Sharper.
Like trouble was waiting quietly beneath the surface.
“Miss Blake.”
Naomi turned immediately.
One of the board assistants approached her nervously. “Mr. Sinclair wants you in the conference room.”
Her stomach tightened.
That couldn’t be good.
When Naomi entered the conference room, she found Ethan Sinclair standing near the windows speaking with two members of the board.
The moment his eyes met hers, she noticed the subtle tension in his expression.
He looked furious.
Not at her.
At the situation.
One board member adjusted his glasses before speaking carefully.
“Miss Blake, please sit.”
Naomi obeyed quietly.
Something was definitely wrong.
The older woman seated across from her folded her hands calmly. “We’ve received anonymous complaints regarding inappropriate favoritism within the executive department.”
Naomi’s heart stopped briefly.
Oh no.
Beside the windows, Ethan’s jaw tightened visibly.
The board member continued.
“Normally we ignore workplace rumors. However…” He slid a printed document across the table. “This was delivered anonymously this morning.”
Naomi looked down.
Her blood ran cold instantly.
Photos.
Blurry security screenshots taken from office cameras.
Nothing explicit.
Nothing proving anything.
But enough to raise suspicion.
One picture showed Ethan standing too close to her near his office.
Another captured them alone on the executive balcony.
And the last one
Naomi’s stomach dropped.
The almost-kiss in Ethan’s office weeks ago.
Not the actual moment.
But close enough.
Heat rushed to Naomi’s face immediately.
This was bad.
Catastrophically bad.
“We take professional ethics very seriously at Sinclair Group,” the woman said firmly.
Naomi forced herself to stay calm despite the panic rising inside her chest.
“With respect,” she said carefully, “these photos prove absolutely nothing.”
“That may be true,” the board member admitted. “But perception matters.”
Naomi hated that he was right.
Ethan finally stepped forward then, his voice calm but dangerously cold.
“This discussion ends here.”
The room became silent instantly.
The older man frowned slightly. “Ethan”
“My assistant is being harassed anonymously, and instead of investigating that problem, you’re interrogating her over rumors.”
The tension in the room sharpened immediately.
Naomi looked at Ethan in surprise.
He sounded genuinely angry on her behalf.
One board member sighed heavily. “We’re trying to protect the company.”
“And I’m trying to protect an employee.”
The quiet intensity in Ethan’s voice made Naomi’s chest tighten unexpectedly.
The woman across from them glanced between both of them carefully.
Which only made Naomi more nervous.
Because suddenly this no longer looked like professional concern.
It looked personal.
Dangerously personal.
Finally the older man stood slowly. “Fine. But control this situation before it becomes a scandal.”
The board members left moments later, leaving heavy silence behind.
Naomi stayed seated, staring down at the photographs.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered quietly.
Ethan looked at her immediately. “For what?”
“This is happening because of me.”
“No,” he replied sharply. “This is happening because someone is trying to manipulate us.”
Us.
The word lingered between them.
Naomi stood slowly. “They’re suspicious now.”
“I know.”
“If more photos appear”
“They won’t.”
The certainty in Ethan’s voice surprised her.
Naomi frowned slightly. “How can you be sure?”
Something dark crossed his expression briefly.
“Because I’m going to find whoever sent them first.”
The rest of the day became unbearable.
Naomi felt watched constantly.
Conversations stopped when she walked past.
Coworkers looked curious.
Suspicious.
Interested.
And somewhere beneath all the whispers, fear slowly settled into her chest.
Because this wasn’t harmless gossip anymore.
Someone was actively targeting them.
Around lunchtime, Naomi escaped briefly to the empty break room for peace.
Unfortunately, peace lasted exactly thirty seconds.
“Well,” a smooth voice said behind her, “things are getting interesting fast.”
Naomi turned sharply.
Vanessa Cole leaned casually against the doorway holding a coffee cup.
Naomi instantly felt exhausted.
“I’m not in the mood today.”
Vanessa smiled slightly. “That obvious?”
Naomi crossed her arms. “Did you need something?”
Vanessa studied her carefully for a few seconds before speaking again.
“You really care about him.”
The statement caught Naomi off guard completely.
“I”
“You do,” Vanessa interrupted softly. “I can tell.”
Naomi looked away quickly.
Vanessa sighed quietly afterward.
“You know,” she murmured, “this company destroys people who get too close to Ethan.”
Naomi frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
For the first time since meeting her, Vanessa’s expression lost some of its usual amusement.
“Ethan carries enemies you don’t know about yet.”
A chill ran through Naomi instantly.
Before she could ask another question, Vanessa straightened calmly again.
“Just be careful, Naomi.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving Naomi standing there with one terrifying realization growing in her mind.
Maybe the anonymous messages weren’t just office jealousy.
Maybe something much worse had started.
