Francisca was headed to the back of the hacienda when her brother called out, “Isaiah is coming! I see him on the road.” Whatever Francisca had on her mind to do, was forgotten. Grasping her dress to lift it above her shoes, she rushed to the front door to see. Like magic, Carlotta appeared and gave her the eye. Flushing, Francisca said quickly, “I promise, I will behave.” Carlotta, with a hint of a smile on her face, watched her charge skip out the door.
