Three days later, LeRue stood next to the gate and watched as the vaqueros herded eight mesteños (mustangs) through the gate and into the box canyon. As soon as the horses and men had cleared the gate, LeRue closed it. He looped a piece of rope attached to the gate over a fence post securing it. He mounted his horse and rode into the canyon.
The vaqueros had herded the horses to an area near the shade trees along the river. Most of the horses went to the river to drink while the others, still nervous, milled about. Crow rode up and joined LeRue. “That makes twenty, I think we have enough to work with for now,” Said Crow.
