From the crest of the hill, Jed and five other Crow youngsters watched a Sioux encampment below them. One of the boys silently pointed to a herd of more than 100 horses. The others nodded their heads in understanding. They then eased down the back side of the hill and disappeared into the woods.
Jed wore traditional Crow clothing: leggings, loincloth, and a leather shirt. On his feet, he wore a pair of the moccasins that LeRue had given him. Each of them was armed with a war-club and a knife. Jed reached for his possibles bag and opened it. From inside the bag, he withdrew a bundle of jerky. Jed offered the jerky to the others. Each took a piece examining it, then smelling it before they tasted it. In a short time, each had a smile on his face as he chewed.
