Jed had been in the Crow village for over a year and a half. His hair had grown long, and he wore it like his father in a net at the nape of his neck. The eagle feather, stuck into the ball of his hair, was worn proudly. He had been on many raiding parties and had earned the respect of the tribe. Though Jed said nothing, he worried that his father and LeRue were late.
It was late spring when LeRue and Santiago found the Crow encampment. Santiago who had never been out of California was amazed by all he had seen on their two-month trek. From their position on some high ground, they looked down at the village. “Sit still and do not touch your weapons,” said LeRue in a low voice.
