The death of White Crow brought great sorrow to Broken Leg. In anguish, the old warrior cut off clumps of his hair and cut himself across his chest creating a scar that would remain forever. He then cut off the little finger of his left hand at the first knuckle. These self-inflicted wounds seemed not to cause him as much pain as the loss of his son. LeRue stopped Jed from following his grandfather"s actions. “You are returning to the white man"s world. You will need your fingers. Cut your hair. They will understand.” Several days were spent telling and retelling stories about White Crow. Broken Leg and the others asked LeRue, over and over, to talk about the time he spent with White Crow. The stories would influence Jed for the rest of his life. LeRue had given Jed his father"s rifle.
