After making sure that man who was carrying my grandma is properly dismembered, me and Asher stood there looking at each other in confusion. What now?
“ Now hell somebody gotta explain why my grandma was dug out of her grave," I say, looking at her limp on the floor. I bend down to helping her lie on her back, as to pick her from the ground. All too fast her eyes shoot open, staring at me.
“Ahh!!" I jolt startled as bloody red eyes stare at mine. She roars in anger, revealing razer sharp teeth, and monstrous tongue. Her skin pale white, withering from the bones. I stumble back startled trying to run away from her. Fear consumes me as she jumps on top of me with impossible speed. Her great strength keeping me grounded.
“What the hell! What is this?" Stormi growls as we struggle under her. Trying to fight as she's actively trying to sink her teeth into my throat. She's very strong, and her claws dig into my skin. The slimy cold saliva dripping on my face. And she smells like rotten flesh, as much as she looks like it.
This monster is not my grandma. Because it wants me dead.
“ Granny please stop!" I shriek, trying to get through the feral monster on top of me even though I'm possibly just speaking to myself. She didn't seem to have any senses what so ever. Just a killing machine hungry for blood.
“RAAAH!!!" It roars in response, it's claws cutting deeper, desperately trying to fight it off.
Then suddenly a splash of cold blood hits my face. I cringe in disgust, as the crimson liquid welts my face with the body pushing it's weight against me. Quickly I push the body aside, finding the hideous head staring at me as I look to the other side.
“ What the heck? You just chopped of granny's hear off," I exclaim getting up as I wipe the blood from my face. Though I know it's a monster, it didn't sit me well know she is the monster. That she tried to kill me.
“ Because your grandma wanted to eat your face! It was either you or her, and the choice was pretty clear to make," He claims throwing away the sword in his hand. “ And that thing is not your grandma!"
“ Don't call my grandma a thing," I protest looking at the ugly head. It looks nothing like her, and yet somehow this is her head. I look at it with a pained expression. I can't believe this is really happening. What's going on?
" I'm sorry, “ Asher tries to console me, pulling me closer to him as he squeezes my shoulder. " I know it's a lot to take in, “ he continues. It's almost impossible to take in. I feel like I'm dreaming, that I should wake eventually.
Why would something like this be really happening? It's a nightmare.
" But why? “ I lament, falling to his embrace. I didn't understand why all this was happening to me. None of it makes any sense to me. How do you make sense of something like this?
" I know. But we'll get to the bottom of this. Find out why these people were here. What did they want from your grandma and why... “ he couldn't even finish his sentence. He too sounds very saddened by everything that happened. Maybe he couldn't have been a part of this as much as I thought.
" Well it's pretty clear that they are the ones that killed her, “ I point out with a heavy heart. " I'll find a lighter,” I say breaking from his grip moving back to the house. Thinking that the dead bodies lying around could also turn feral. My heart sank with fear and sorrow. I thought I was pretty close to finding the truth, but now everything seems even more complicated. Mystery after mystery, I can't even keep my head straight.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that granny turned feral and tried to kill me. Out of all people who hate me, her? It didn't make sense. Out of the many people I've encountered she's the last person I'd expect to try and kill me. Something is wretched here.
I find the gaslight, then helping Asher to move the bodies. Move further into the depths of the garden garden. There wasn't much communication between us. I guess both we are still beyond shocked. Collecting wood from the forest piling it, follow by the dead bodies.
I watch the bodies laying against each other, as Asher pours paraffin on top of them. Blinking back tears, trying not to think of the fact that my grandma is amongst those bodies because it greatly breaks my heart.
“I'll go and try to clean the house," I sigh as they are easily engulfed in flames. I just couldn't bare to watch them burn.
Asher nods, and I leave him alone with the burning bodies.
My head and heart stands very conflicted. Trying to make sense, piece together the pieces of the puzzle but it's impossible with so many pieces still missing.
Could it have something to do with the dream I once had? As I vaguely bits of pieces, and something exactly like this happening. Though I also remember there was someone else in the dream. Could they be connected in all of this?
“Maybe it was a vision," Stormi says.
“But there was someone else. Who could that someone be ?" I wonder. I want to say it's Asher, but I'm also refusing to admit that. He seems genuinely disturbed about this, as I am.
“ Visions are not always clear as you'd want them to be. It means we should be extra careful," she says. " And try to get to the bottom of this, “ she adds.
This isn't going to be any easier.
I try to clean the glass from the floor, and broken peaces of wood, both from my fight Asher, and more from the intruders. After throwing them away, trying to clean the stains of blood spattered every, from the floor to the wall and the furniture around.
Granny has a very small house, but lovely and functional. There's everything a house should have. I walk around the dreamy kitchen. Running my hands on the cold polished oak cabinetry. The counter tops grey in color almost black, the cabinets with an ash color that wants to be white. Everything even though with dust it looks very clean, proving that it's well kept. I imagine how she must have enjoyed moving around here. In any house, the kitchen was always her favorite place. It still carries her scent, and food recently cooked.
The oven that she must have used to bake the best cookies in the world. The fridge is still filled with variety of food. I reach out to take an apple taking a bite into it, before closing it. My eyes landing on a picture pinned in the middle of the fridge's door.
I pick it up not letting my eyes off it. It was a photo of my grandma, with my grandfather at the day of their wedding. Her in a beautiful white, mermaid dress that squeezed her body perfectly. She's still young and very beautiful in the picture, but as always with her lively smile that lit every heart. A handsome man standing besides her in a beautifully tailored suit. It was grandpa. Excitement filled both their faces. As grandma always told this was the best day in her life, though she always says it couldn't compare to the day she met her mate.
Tears trickle down my face as I watch the picture. I couldn't help that even though she's only been dead for a few days, I miss her so bad. Maybe it's because I've been gone for so many years, and when I finally found a chance to spend time with her, she was all gone. How's it that she's the only person who ever loved me, and yet the least person who's ever been in my life. The only person who saw greatness in my life, I never even got a chance to spend time with her. And when finally I thought we can be together, she's gone. I thought we could both go to one of her many adventures. That she'd tell more of her stories. And make great memories together. Memories I'll forever remember, and maybe someday I'd also get a chance to tell them to my children.
Maybe everyone was just meant to hate me. That no one is supposed to love me, or so they should suffer. What ever I did must be so bad, that I should deserve all this.
“Hey?" Asher suddenly enters interrupting my thoughts.
“Yeah?" I wipe the tears off my face, hiding my feelings from him. Even though I knew very well he could read right through my transparent veil.
" I thought you should see something, “ he says. I put the picture back where it was, glancing at it one last time. Following Asher out of the kitchen finishing off the rest of the apple. He leads me back to where the stranger's cars were parked.
He shows me a white windowless van, opening the backside door for me to see inside. I'm shocked that there's a cage of steel inside. The shining metal, meaning it's freshly made. Shackles ordained around the iron bars. I can tell from here that it's made of silver, and should hurt any wolf that finds itself in its confinement. And where the cage should be locked, there's the same mark I've been seeing all day.
" It's a cage, “ I point out. " Meaning they already knew that she would turn feral, “ I turn to look at Asher.
" Yes. But now the question is why were they so interested in taking her away? Something is not adding up, “ he says.
" Do you think it has something to do with the attack back at the pack? “ I question him. This couldn't be just a coincidence. Something reeks very badly about this. Though those people we just fought, don't seem like the people who would cause that much extensive damage. “ Could it be ferals like my grandma that attacked them?"
“It's possible. We will have to go back to the pack to get more information, they should be awake by now,” he says. " And try to find out who could be turning wolves feral," he adds closing the door of the van.
“ But why would someone be creating them? And how?" I question. It didn't make sense at all. “And why would they target my grandma?"
“ Maybe it's because she lives alone, there's literally no one around here. Making her an easy target. Even the wolves that were attacked back at home, were not within the territory. They attacked outside in the rogue's territory,” he explains.
" But how do mindless ferals know where to attack? “ I wonder. Something missing from all this. And my grandma didn't seem to be attacked by a feral. Otherwise I should expect her to be torn into pieces instead of just a wound in the heart.
“ I'll have to someone to come and tow the vehicles for further investigation, “ he says glancing back at the van.
I head back on look around the house one last time, closing and follow each other out of the farm. We head from the farm back to the dirt road. To where we had left the car. Well at least Angela's car is still in one piece.
We kept in silence, possibly because he was trying to process everything as I was. Trying to make sense of the current situation. Even though I don't trust him, I can't see him being involved in all of this.
I drive us back to the pack. Everyone is still in panic, even when they try to act normal. I can't unsee the fact that they anticipate when would the next attack take place. Whether they are safe within where they are standing. They mountain of questions about everything happened.
Our state of being, even invoking more fear in their hearts. We didn't look like anything that should be calming in this situation. Though I'd think they will just assume that we got into a really bad fight with each other. Which is somewhat true. Or what are the odds that we were possibly attacked by what attacked one of their own in the woods.
We go straight to the clinic, to find the victims. “ Lynn, are they awake?" Asher question, as the moment we step inside we are attacked by the nurse that helped me earlier.
“ Yes. But what happened!?" She looks between the two off us, our clothes stained with fresh blood.
“It's a long story," Asher says, dismissing the curiousness of the nurse. She looks back at me very pitiful.
“Are you okay?" She inspects, very sympathetic.
“It's not my blood, most of it," I tell her. Which makes her even more curious. If it's not only my blood, whose is it. “Please lead us to the victims. We have some questions, “ I instruct.
" Uhh, yes, “ she answers still thunderstruck. We follow her to rooms where they were kept. " They are healed. But we kept them here just in case something comes up, “ she adds.
" Have they shared anything about the attack? “ I ask her.
She sighs looking at me." I think you should come and hear for yourselves, “ she answers. She leads us to one of the rooms where one of the victims lie in a small bed with tiny sheets. Even when he's doing a good job hiding, it's pretty clear that he's very scared. That whatever it is that they encountered, something beyond their scale of reasoning. Even though dark skinned, his skin looks so pale, his heart beating extremely fast.
“ Alpha," he bows his head, as we enter.
" Christian,” Asher addresses him.
" I'm sorry Alpha. It's all my fault my friends got attacked. I should have stopped us when Zayn dared everyone to go and hunt in the rouge lands, “ he speaks whilst his head is still bowed, in respect but mostly in fear of meeting the fury of his Alpha.
" Christian you're one of my best warriors. I thought you knew better than that, “ Asher reprimands him, angered by it as Christian expected him to be.
" I know I was very foolish. I should have known know better than to disobey my Alpha. And I'm willing to take my punishment as it comes, “ he says, even though he didn't look any what ready for whatever ever punishment Asher should supposedly give to him. It only just makes my heart break for him.
" I'll deal with your stupidity later. Tell me what happened in that forest, “ Asher demands wanting an instant answer.
" We were all hunting in the forest when they all appeared out of nowhere and attacked us, “ he starts his tale. But Asher gets more impatient as it's not the details he's interested in.
" Who attacked you!? “ Asher's voice booms impatient. Christian winces terrified by his voice.
" They were huge, fast and strong. Even our wolves didn't stand a chance against them, “ he continues to explain. And I can see Asher boiling in anger.
" But who attacked you? “ I jump in, as Asher is about to bite off Christian's head.
" They were cats?“ He answers causing me and Asher to look at each other dumbfounded.
