Chapter 2

Lorraine "Have a seat please." Principal Manning said as she took her place behind her desk. I went to the only other available seat in the room, the one crammed between my grandparents (my parents, as far as anyone here was concerned), who had less than happy looks on their faces. "It has come to my attention that Lorraine has been sleeping through many of her classes." "Lorraine?" My grandfather Andrew asked, a shocked look on his face. To everyone else, he was known as Marty. He helped my father run the eastern werewolf kingdom for many years, but that is another story for another time. My grandmother Sylvia, AKA Sandy, had a disapproving look on her face. She always took the teachers' side, claiming that raising three mischievous pups of her own taught her that outsiders usually had a clearer outlook on what was going on. Not my grandpa though, he was easy to win over. He would be my ticket out of here...hopefully. "It might have happened a few times but-" "You have been caught sleeping through seventy of your classes in the past two months alone," Principal Manning said, reading off reports from my teachers no doubt. "And that's not counting classes that you have completely missed." "Lorraine!" My grandmother hissed. "I don't see what the big deal is." I huffed. "My grades are fine, more than fine actually. So what if I sleep through class?" "Well young lady, that is why we have called you here today." Principal Manning said, tossing my file down on her cluttered desk. "With you sleeping through many of your classes and outright refusing to attend others, we are questioning the legitimacy of your grades." "What, you think I'm cheating?" I scoffed. The murderous look on her face told me all I needed to know. "Lorraine-" My grandpa began. "I'm not cheating!" I exclaimed. "Unfortunately, you are not the first student to come into my office and claim innocence when it is clear you are lying, and nor will you be the last. I'm afraid that we will need to take drastic measures to ensure these actions stop." "What sort of drastic measures?" My grandmother asked. "Well, since we are more than halfway through the school year, and summer school is only two months long, I have decided that the best option would be to hold her back a year." Principal Manning said. "You can't do that!" I hissed. I might like this pack, but I don't care who you are, I think it's fair to say that almost everyone hates high school. Whether it be the mandatory learning and the packed schedule, the smell, the annoying students, the sometimes-awful teachers, the awkward phase that goes with it all, everyone at some point hates high school. Of that, I am sure. "It's already been sent off to the Alpha to be approved." "Now wait a minute-" My grandfather began. "Marty-" My grandmother snipped. "Test me." I blurted out. "Test me in one of the specialized rooms where I can't possibly cheat and let me prove to you that I know my f*****g shit." "Lorraine, language!" I ignored my grandmother, looking the devil of a principal in the eyes as I repeated my demand with as much venom as I could summon. "Test me." Her eyes went hazy, obviously linking someone. Probably the other teachers, if not the Alpha himself. He took students' education very, very seriously. It was part of why his pack was so famous; for its education and training. She straightened after a minute and looked me in the eyes again. "Fine. We will schedule it for next week with an official proctor. You will be tested at every level, so we know exactly where you fall in each subject and where we need to work on. And perhaps even what grade we need to put you at." "Fine." I spat. "Be sure to pack your lunch and bring several number two pencils. You will not be permitted to leave the testing room until you are completely finished with all the testing." "I look forward to it." I said, standing to leave. "That's not all, Miss Fuller. We must also discuss the matter of detention. Every missed class has earned you an hour of detention." "How many?" I practically growled, my own alpha genes surging through my veins, threatening to level this place for their pure stupidity. "Too many for us to subject our staff to sit through with you after school. We have decided that weekend community service will be better suited for you. Four eight-hour days and we will call it even." Two full weekends. Fine. f*****g fine. "Anything else?" I dared her. "That will be all, for now." I stormed out of the office, my grandmother hot on my heels. I could hear my grandfather grilling the teachers and principal asking them why he is just learning about this now and not sooner. I didn't stick around to hear the rest. I shoved the glass doors open to reveal my sweet freedom. I felt like I was going to explode, my hands shaking in rage. "You have some explaining to do, young lady-" "Save it, you're not my mom." I hissed and broke into a sprint, heading straight for the forest. I knew the blow landed when I didn't hear her following after me. I wasn't a fast runner by any means, especially without my wolf yet, but she didn't pursue me. I didn't know where I was going, not until I came across a cemetery and, despite my better judgment, decided to camp out there for an hour while I calmed down. What d***s. Not a single teacher ever asked me if I was okay. They just collectively let it build up to this breaking point. I didn't even realize that I had slept through that many classes. It averaged more than one a day. I knew my sleep got worse after the battle I helped my twin brothers with, but more than one class a day? Maybe Sarah was right. Maybe I should see the pack doctor and start taking something stronger. Only when I was sure that I wasn't going to bite someone's head off did I take the long way back home, practically shuffling my way there. Unsurprisingly, when I got home, I could hear my grandparents bickering in the kitchen. "Sylvia, I think you are making too big a deal of this." "Andrew, you saw her attendance reports! You saw how many they marked as her sleeping through! She cannot go unpunished." "I just think we should hear her out first. She is a good pup. She has been through a lot. I just think we should cut her some slack." "A lot of people have been through a lot. That doesn't excuse her behavior. She is a princess for goddess sake! Should she ever decide to take up her title again, I'd like people to see her as a successful young woman and not some punk bucking the system." Okay, that was enough. Clearing my throat, I entered the kitchen, ready for round two. Their conversation halted immediately, their eyes set on me. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about sleeping through class." I began. "I've been having a lot of vivid dreams lately." Partial truth. If vivid dreams were spirits constantly waking me up at night. "How long?" My grandma asked, her arms crossing across her chest. "Since the battle," I said quietly. After summoning an unread army to help my brothers defeat a deadly being...without telling them first. A spirit, my sister, in fact, warned me what was happening and told me where to go. I didn't leave a note or call or text. I had just left in the dead of night with my grandparents' car and was led to the battlefield. I was collected later on by Queen Kelly's mate, and he apparently got me back home where I was then grounded for two months for such a stunt. I don't remember much of what happened that day, only that, ever since, I have been harassed by spirits ten times more than I ever was before. "Goddess!" My grandmother huffed. "And when were you going to tell us?" "Now..." I shrugged. "Tomorrow, right after school, I'm taking you to the clinic. We will see if the doctor can give you something, and perhaps set up an appointment with a counselor as well." "I don't need a counselor." I huffed. "That will be for the doctor to decide." She snipped, turning back to the stove to check on dinner. Special testing. Community service. Sleep meds. Counseling. f*****g great. "Dinner will be ready in twenty minutes." My grandfather said with sympathy in his eyes. "I'm not hungry." I said, and darted upstairs to go lay down before nighttime hit, and it was all game over.
