I turn and hold up my suitcase.
"Good thing I just finished packing."
Vincent nods and together we head downstairs and to the porch of the packhouse. Our group is already waiting for us, packed into a 3 car caravan of silver SUVs. Vincent takes shotgun in the lead and I take shotgun in the rear, just to ensure our ends are covered.
The wolf driving my vehicle isn't the chatty sort, so I pull out a book and begin to read. It's a book I found in the Alpha's library a few months ago.
See ever since I first shifted, I've had strange abilities. Sometimes my wolf and I see the future, or what someone is thinking or occasionally I've been able to do unexplainable things.. I can't really control it, but we've been able to keep it under wraps as a family. Magic gifts aren't normal in our pack and aren't treated very nicely.
They've gotten stronger since I turned 18, so I started reading up on our pack' history and how Zachary's family first united the packs to become Alpha over such a large territory and why none of the packs had magic abilities.
Still, this book is dry and between the motion of the car and not getting great sleep last night I doze off.
I float in darkness for a bit then begin to see forms and shapes. A man with long dark hair braided down his back is leaning over a car, hood popped. He is built like a freight train and he looks like he could tear me apart without thinking twice.
He stands up and wipes his hands off, and shakes his head. Then his eyes flick upwards and he looks directly at me, from where I'm silently dreaming and winks. His deep brown eyes pull me closer and I can't help but feel intoxicated by them.
Suddenly a jolt pulls me awake, the dream dissipating. Rain is pattering on the windshield and I smell burning. My eyes fly open and I see the silver SUV in front of me is stopped, too, with its hazard lights going. I rush out of the car, the driver calling to me. We're on the shoulder.
I round the SUV and see the first SUV. Its front end is torn apart and it's engine is smoking blue. The airbags are deployed. I wrench the passenger's side open with help from my wolf and carefully pull Vincent from the wreck. There's no sign of what his SUV hit, just the front end completely smashed. My driver and the second SUVs driver are at my side.
I instruct one to hold Vincent's head up. He's unconscious but his wolf should be taking care of his healing. I go to find his driver, but can already tell he isn't recoverable. I get the remaining two omegas out of the vehicle and then return to Vincent.
The other wolves stare at me, unsure what to do. No one here is higher ranking than me, I realize abruptly. The future beta's brother. Great.
I order one Omega to phone the packhouse immediately and get word to Alpha Zachary. The remaining unranked wolves I begin to order to set up a perimeter when a voice cuts me short.
"I don't think that'll be necessary."
I look up and squint through the rain to see a group of men emerge from the shrubland. They're all shirtless and deeply tan with stylized tattoos running across their body.
"Who are you?" My wolf bristles and I'm on guard immediately.
"We are wolves of the Tall Tree Pack."
I swallow hard and flounder slightly.
"I am of the Over Hill pack, we were sent to meet with you by Alpha Zachary. We mean no trespass."
"We will be the judge of that. Your man is injured, let us help you."
I walk closer to them, and suddenly am awash with a smell stronger than the rain. It's more alluring than any scent I've ever encountered. My wolf is right there at the forefront of my mind, screaming MATE.
Bewildered, I step back and try to gain control. There isn't a she wolf among them as far as I can tell.
The tallest and most built of them closes the distance between us and looks me in the eyes before shouting commands to those with him. I can hardly meet them, they overflow with a confidence I've only ever seen in Alphas.
"I am Hawk. Let us take you into town."
