Chapter 2 The Wolf Hunt

1068 Words
Cassandra I sat up on the bed, finding it difficult to move as much as I would have loved to because of how badly my head was aching. "What happened back there, Cassandra? Was there something going on between you and Rio?" I played with my fingers as I racked my brain for an explanation to give her. I knew I couldn't hide it from her anymore. "Rio and I... We had been seeing each other and he was supposed to mark me and make me his Luna. I don't know how he and Heloise..." I trailed off. I couldn't bring myself to complete the sentence. My eyes stung, and I blinked rapidly to stop the tears from flowing. "What!" Eve's eyes bulged out so much that I feared that they would burst out of her eye sockets. She began pacing up and down, her index finger in between her teeth. "So, you've been seeing Rio this whole time?" Her tone was a mixture of disbelief and betrayal. "Yes, I—I didn't know how to tell you." I dropped my gaze, looking down at my toes instead. "This is unbelievable!" She sat down beside me and buried her face in her palms. "I'm sorry, sis. I know I should have told you..." "Yeah, you should have!" She seethed. "There's no need to apologize. The deed has been done." There was an edge to her voice and I feared what was to come, but the next thing she said made me relax a little. "What do you plan on doing?" She raised my face with her right index finger until our eyes met. "Does that mean you are not mad at the fact that I didn't carry you along anymore?" I needed to be reassured that she was on my side. "Well, you did what you did, and what happened has happened. No need to cry over spilt milk. We just have to look for a solution. Are you alright? I know that this isn't easy for you..." Her words pierced through my heart and I broke down and cried. Eve held me to her chest, caressing my hair, but said nothing. I swallowed hard as the memories of what happened some hours ago came flooding back. Rio and Heloise were mated. “W–why do you think Rio did this to me?” I stuttered as I used the back of my palm to wipe my tears. Eve helped me to sit up, making sure that I was facing her directly. “That is the reason you must never trust men or get attached to them emotionally.” “But—” “No ‘buts.’” She squeezed my hands. “What has happened has happened. I know you are hurt, but you cannot keep crying over that jerk of a man!” Her tone was fierce, as though she was the one who had been hurt. I had never seen my sister in love or talk about any man in a romantic way. “I need to run an errand right now. Alpha Rio said he wants to have a word with me. Leave everything to me. I’ll gather as much information as I can.” “Why would he want to talk to you?” “I don’t know. But that’s what I’m going to find out.” She smiled, but the smile did not quite reach her eyes. "Everything isn't alright, but I will come back. Just try and rest. I'll get you the answers you need." She left the house and locked the door after her. I picked up my phone and searched for Rio's contact number, but I could not bring myself to call him. I wanted some sort of closure. I stared at the number before switching off the phone. With great difficulty, I dragged my legs out of the bed. My stomach was beginning to sing a sad song, but I had no appetite. I decided to leave the house, even though I had no destination. As soon as I stepped out, I was hit by the scorching sun. Ignoring it, I walked toward the bus stop. I opted for a bus, hoping to go to the city, away from my house and the memories it held. Maybe I could even pay Rio a visit. “Watch where you are going, young lady!” a driver yelled. “I'm sorry,” I muttered. When I crossed the road, I looked up at the billboard that read “Rio Nightcracker’s Enterprise.” My heart began to race as I took steps toward the building. “Cassandra!” That was Eve’s voice. I turned and saw her waving at me from across the road. Something was wrong. She lifted her phone to her ear. Moments later, my phone rang. “Turn around this instant! There has been a wolf hunt set in place for you!” I couldn’t comprehend what she was saying. I only wanted to see Rio. “Cassandra!” she screamed. I crossed the road and walked up to her. “I don't understand. Which wolf hunt?” She was crying now. “I went to Ravenclaw castle. Heloise is dead, Cassie. Rumor has it that you are the murderer.” “I don’t understand,” I said weakly. “Heloise is dead?” I felt dizzy, but Eve caught me. “Come!” She dragged me into her car. After driving a short distance, several cars cornered us. She tried to maneuver away but collided with another vehicle. "Jump out!" Eve ordered, pushing me out. "What about you?" "I'll be alright. Run to the forest. You’ve been framed. You can’t come back home.” “How did you find out?” “I overheard people talking. Rio organized a wolf hunt for you. He wants you dead.” Everything was happening too fast. “I can’t run as fast as you.” Eve slapped me. “You are my sister, and you are strong!” She held my shoulders. “Go. May the goddess be with you.” She transformed into a wolf and ran. A strange energy enveloped me and I began running. I looked back an d saw wolves chasing me. Suddenly, I fell into a net and was lifted into the air. I looked down and met the eyes of the hungry wolves.
