The cold stone of the corridor pressed against my spine as I leaned there, trying to catch my breath. I had shifted almost. Not fully, not gracefully, but enough to spark awe in the Council and silence their doubts for now. But beneath their grudging approval, something else stirred in me. Power. And fear.
