Chapter 7: Too Close for Comfort.

1065 Words
Elena woke to the soft hum of voices. For a moment, she lay still unsteady. The plush sheets, the towering windows, the faint scent of expensive coffee all reminded her where she was. Damian’s penthouse. Her heart skipped. The contract marriage. The gala. The closeness. The tension that refused to fade. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, still fuzzy from sleep. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She picked it up. Lara: Are you alive or officially kidn*pped by your billionaire husband? Elena let out a weak laugh. The humor didn’t reach her eyes. She typed back quickly. Elena: Alive. Barely. Call you later. Sliding out of bed, she dressed quickly, trying to shake off the lingering fatigue. The smell of coffee drifted down the hall, rich and tempting. Damian was already in the kitchen. Dressed sharply, his shirt crisp, tie perfectly straight. He looked up when she entered, his expression unreadable. Morning, he said simply. Morning, she replied, keeping her voice neutral. Neutrality was easier than admitting how unsettled she felt around him. There’s a breakfast meeting in an hour, he said, his voice calm but firm. The press expects you there. Elena froze. She had thought they agreed she wouldn’t attend all these events. This one matters, he added, as if reading her mind. It’s small. Controlled. She hesitated, weighing the options. She hated the attention. She hated being watched. But she nodded. Fine. The drive to the restaurant was quiet. She stared out the window at the city walking beneath them. The hum of traffic, the early morning joggers, the flash of sunlight off glass buildings all seemed unreal. Being with Damian in public felt like a delicate performance, one she wasn’t sure she could master. When they arrived, cameras were already waiting. Photographers’ flashes lit the entrance like lightning. Elena’s stomach tightened. She took a deep breath. Stay calm. Play your part. Damian reached for her hand almost automatically. She let him hold it this time. The warmth of his touch sent a jolt through her, and she tried not to react. The meeting went almost too smoothly. Investors complimented her insights, smiled at her, nodded approvingly. Elena answered questions confidently, her voice steady, her posture perfect. She played the role of the composed, capable wife and business partner flawlessly. But as they stood to leave, a new presence caught her attention. A woman approached. Tall. Elegant. Confidence radiated from her like a spotlight. Damian, the woman said warmly. It’s been a long time. Elena felt Damian tense beside her. His hand, which had been resting lightly over hers, stiffened. Rachel, he said, carefully controlled. Rachel’s gaze slid to Elena, and she said with a polite tilt of her head, And you must be the wife. Elena forced a polite smile. Elena. Rachel studied her. Her eyes lingered for a moment too long. He moves fast, she said softly, almost to herself. The words stung more than Elena expected. She felt an icy twist in her stomach. Damian’s hand brushed hers. We should go, he said firmly. Rachel’s smile didn’t waver. Of course. Call me sometime. As they walked toward the car, Elena’s chest felt tight. Who is she? she asked once they were alone in the backseat. Damian hesitated. Someone from my past, he said slowly, carefully. More than that, she pressed. Yes, he admitted. She was more than that. The rest of the ride passed in silence. The city streets blurred beneath the car, the occasional honk of traffic filling the gaps. Elena replayed the interaction in her mind. She hated feeling jealous, but she couldn’t deny it. You don’t owe me explanations, she said finally, trying to sound firm. This is fake. He turned to look at her, dark eyes unreadable. Is it? She looked away, biting her lower lip. Her heart thumped in a way that made her feel vulnerable, exposed. Back at the penthouse, Elena paced the living room, hands twisting in front of her. I don’t like surprises, she said finally. Neither do I, Damian said calmly, stepping closer. But Rachel is finished. That’s not what it looked like, she snapped, frustration bubbling up. He stopped and studied her. Slowly, he stepped closer. You’re jealous, he said softly. Elena laughed sharply, trying to hide the truth. Don’t flatter yourself. But her heart betrayed her. It raced, caught in her throat. She didn’t want to admit it, but she couldn’t. Damian’s voice softened, low and intimate. This is exactly why we need rules. She nodded slowly, exhaling. Then let’s add one. He raised an eyebrow. I’m listening. No past lovers, she said, meeting his gaze. Not in my face. Not in front of me. He considered her words carefully, then nodded. Agreed. For a moment, neither spoke. Their eyes held, and in that silent exchange, something shifted. Too close. Too honest. The air between them felt charged. A warmth that wasn’t part of the contract lingered. Elena felt her pulse quicken. Her thoughts spiraled. She had agreed to a fake marriage. A business arrangement. But the tension, the glances, the small touches felt too real. I… she started, then shook her head. We need to keep control. He smiled faintly, almost fondly. Control? Yes, she said, her voice soft. Rules. Boundaries. We can’t let this get out of hand. Damian reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. The touch was gentle, intimate, and it made her heart pound. Elena swallowed hard. Damian. Feelings happen, he said softly. We can’t control them. But we can control what we do next. She looked at him, his dark eyes earnest, patient, commanding. She wanted to pull back. She wanted to hide from everything this stirred inside her. But she didn’t. Because a part of her didn’t want to. They stood there in silence, the city lights twinkling below them, the wind brushing against their skin. Elena realized that the danger wasn’t the contract anymore. It was him. It was their emotions. And no rule, no contract, no agreement could stop that. Her breath caught. Damian’s presence, his closeness, his touch it all threatened to undo her. And for the first time, Elena understood the truth she had been trying to ignore: the contract was no longer the most dangerous thing in her life. Their hearts were. And the pull between them was impossible to resist.
