Claire I woke up to bright lights blinding me. A groan left my lips as I recovered from.my haze. It took a while to remember what happened. Teana…the wine. All sleep left me as I sat up alert. I tensed and sat up from the bed in alarm, ready to attack. But I looked around. I wasn't in an unknown place. This was my room. “How are you feeling now?” A man's voice came out of nowhere. I stiffened before the man came into view shaking his head. “I'm the pack doctor. Do you still remember what happened?” I nodded, “What happened?” The older man sighed “You were nearly abducted but luckily you were saved in the nick of time before anything could happen to you. From the little I heard, Teana, who I suppose is the mastermind, has been taken to the dungeons. Alpha Derek is leading her punishment and her fate seems grim.” ‘What?’ I gasped in shock. He was punishing her? “From what I've seen, Alpha Derek really seems to care about you. Miss Claire.” The older man smiled, “I'm sure he will be glad to know that you are making a fast recovery.” A lump formed in my throat. I kept silent as he packed all the equipment away. He stepped out of the door before turning back to me. “Get some rest. The sedative is still in your system. It will clear up from your blood and you'll be fine in the morning.” The pack doctor said. I nodded numbly. Derek punished Teana? I hated the warm feeling that came from hearing that he defended me. I wish I could simply ignore it as an effect of the mate bond but it wasn't anymore. Why? Why was Derek so kind to me when I should hate him? Why couldn't I muster up the hate I needed? Tears of frustration sprung in my eyes. I tried to wipe them away, burying my face in my pillow. I remained in place trying to sleep. It wasn't too hard with the sedatives effects but I kept on moving in and out of consciousness. In my half conscious half asleep haze I heard my door opening and closing alongside several voices. I quickly recognized them as the maids that often came in to clean my room, no doubt doing the same tonight. Their voices were louder than normal. They probably thought I was asleep but I could hear them clearly. “I heard that Alpha Derek snapped when he heard that she was hurt. He's never done that for any of the women he brought in. She must be special.” “I'm sure. She's really crawled her way into power,” the other woman scoffed, “She's lucky. Good for her that the guards found her.” “What? That's not what I heard. It wasn't the guards that saved her. Alpha Mason was the one who saved her.” I nearly gasped hearing it and the other woman gasped. “Are you sure?” the other woman asked eagerly “One of the guards told me everything. They hadn't even noticed the rogues until Alpha Mason came barrelling in. He defeated all of them singlehandedly and retrieved her back to the pack house.” the other woman said. I was still reeling from the realization. I tried not to think about Derek's brother despite the fact that he was technically also my mate. It didn't matter when I was so focused on trying to charm Derek but I knew that they were polar opposites just like how they dressed. While Derek was suave, sending waves if hear every time I encountered him, all I knew of Mason was his coldness. I didn't mind when I hated him the most. I still hadn't forgotten that he was the one who personally killed my parents and subjected me to servitude. But whether I liked it or not, he saved my life tonight. I refused to owe him anything. When I woke up, it was in the middle of the night and the place was quiet. I quietly trailed out of the room, taking a familiar path. Usually I was used to going towards Derek's room anytime he called for me but I took the opposite way to Mason's room. Knocking on the door, my belly tightened. He was completely shirtless. Heat rose to my cheeks and I quickly looked away. I was already familiar with Derek's body, but this felt different. “What do you want?” His voice rumbled, sending shivers down my spine. ‘Don't forget what he's done.’ I thought inside. All the grief and rage returned and I didn't feel shy in front of him anymore. I bravely entered his room facing him. “ I just wanted to say that I don't owe you anything. But still, thank you, for saving me..” The words burned in my mouth. How could I thank the man who killed my parents for saving my life? I held my tongue back. Silence grew and he still hadn't said anything. I took that as my cue to leave. “It's good that you're with my brother.” He spoke right as I was about to turn a corner. “I have no plans on being anyone's mate, much less yours ” The way he said it made it sound like an insult and it stung harshly. My mind went blank with rage as I spun around and walked furiously to him in the hallway. Without thinking I raised my hand to slap him but he held it before I could land. I should have stopped right then, but the anger pushed me forward. “I never asked for either of you to be my mate.” I growled , “Why would I ever want a mate like you?” Why would I want a mate who is a cold blooded murderer? I expected him to attack or be smug and mock me, but he didn't. His grip tightened on my wrist as his gaze trailed down my face. “Exactly,” he murmured, Without thinking my gaze trailed away, from his eyes towards the angular jawline and his sharp nose. With his long hair framing his face, he looked like a dark angel of the moon Goddess. He looked so similar to Derek, yet so different. I felt possessed the moment his lips crashed into mine. My logic told him to push him away, yet I pulled him closer. His warm hard frame crashed into mine. “Mine,” he growled and my heart lurched. My wolf purred in satisfaction. Before I could think I was abruptly pushed away. My back collided with the wall sending a dull ache through me. I focused my gaze on him instead. He was still standing at the doorway of his room, breathing heavily while looking at me. In his eyes was a faint glint of possessiveness and hunger that made my insides hear up. He turned away, and I flinched as the door slammed in front of me. My heart was racing and I felt my cheeks hot against the night chill. As the seconds passed and the haze left me, the realization of moments ago crashed into me. The tempting heat was replaced with icy dread, leaving only one horrifying thought. What had I just done?
