When Rumors Spread

529 Words
The school corridors were unusually noisy the next morning. Students stood in small groups, whispering to one another. Some looked surprised. Others looked disappointed. And a few couldn't stop staring at Ethan. As soon as Ethan stepped into the classroom, everyone went silent. He frowned. "Why is everyone looking at me?" No one answered. Instead, Sarah slowly walked up to him. "Ethan... is it true?" "Is what true?" She hesitated before handing him a folded piece of paper. Ethan opened it. His heart skipped a beat. It was an anonymous note. "Ethan only accepted the nomination because he thinks he's smarter than everyone else. He says the class deserves a better leader than Victor." Ethan's eyes widened. "I never said this." "I know," Sarah replied softly, "but someone has been placing copies of that note all over the school." Across the room, Victor sat quietly, pretending to read a book. A faint smile appeared on his face. Everything was going exactly as he had planned. By lunchtime, the rumor had spread to almost every class. Students whispered whenever Ethan walked past. "He's so full of himself." "I thought he was humble." "I guess we were wrong." Ethan felt like the walls were closing in around him. "I don't understand," he said to Maya and Daniel. "Who would do this?" Maya folded her arms. "Someone who wants people to stop trusting you." Daniel looked around the cafeteria. "We need proof. Otherwise, no one will believe the truth." That afternoon, Mrs. Adams entered the classroom with a serious expression. "I've heard about the rumors." The room became silent. "I want everyone to remember something." She wrote on the board: Rumors can travel in seconds... but the truth sometimes takes time to catch up. "If anyone is responsible for these notes," she continued, "I expect them to come forward. Our classroom is built on honesty and respect." No one spoke. Victor kept his eyes fixed on his notebook. After school, Maya, Ethan, and Daniel searched the empty classroom for clues. As Ethan reached into his locker, something fell to the floor. It was another anonymous note. This one read: "If you don't withdraw from the election by Friday, everyone you care about will regret it." Maya gasped. "This isn't just a rumor anymore." Daniel clenched his fists. "Someone is trying to scare you." Ethan took a deep breath. "For a moment... I wanted to quit." Maya looked him in the eye. "And now?" Ethan slowly tore the note into tiny pieces. "Now I know that's exactly what they want." "I won't quit." Daniel smiled proudly. "That's the Ethan we know." As the three friends left the classroom, they didn't notice someone hiding behind the stairwell. Victor watched them with narrowed eyes. "So... you're stronger than I thought." He pulled out his phone and sent a message to someone. "Phase one failed. It's time for phase two." A few seconds later, his phone buzzed. The reply contained only four words. "Tomorrow. During assembly." Victor slipped the phone back into his pocket. A slow, confident smile spread across his face. Whatever was planned for the next day... ...would be far worse than a rumor.
