The Empty seat

482 Words
The warning from the seniors lingered in Daniel’s mind long after lunch had ended. “Let’s see if you survive your first week here.” He tried to convince himself it was just harmless teasing, but the uneasy feeling in his stomach refused to disappear. The next morning, the classroom was unusually quiet. Students chatted in small groups while waiting for Mrs. Adams to arrive. Maya glanced toward the seat beside Ethan. It was empty. “That’s strange,” she murmured. “Who?” her friend Sophia asked. “Daniel.” “He’ll probably be late.” But ten minutes passed. Then twenty. His chair remained empty. Mrs. Adams entered the classroom carrying a stack of books. “Good morning, class.” “Good morning, ma’am.” She looked around. “Has anyone seen Daniel Brooks?” The class fell silent. No one answered. Mrs. Adams frowned slightly before beginning the lesson. During break time, Maya couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. “I’m going to check the school clinic,” she told Ethan. “You barely know him,” Ethan replied. “I know.” “Then why are you worried?” Maya smiled gently. “Because kindness doesn’t need a reason.” Ethan watched her leave. For the first time, he questioned why he always kept people at a distance. The clinic was empty. So was the library. Daniel was nowhere to be found. As Maya walked back toward the classroom, she noticed a notebook lying beneath a tree. It looked familiar. She picked it up. Written on the cover were the words: Daniel Brooks She opened it, hoping to find his class. Instead, a folded piece of paper slipped onto the ground. She unfolded it. It wasn’t homework. It was a letter. “No matter how many schools we move to, I always end up alone. Maybe I’m the problem. Maybe I’ll never truly belong anywhere.” Maya’s heart sank. Daniel had written those words before coming to this school. She carefully folded the letter and placed it back inside the notebook. “No one should feel this lonely,” she whispered. Just then, she heard footsteps behind her. It was Ethan. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Maya showed him the notebook. “I found this.” Ethan read the letter silently. His expression changed. For the first time since meeting Daniel, he understood that the quiet boy wasn’t shy… He was hurting. “We have to find him,” Ethan said. Before Maya could answer, the school bell rang loudly. At that very moment, a security guard hurried toward the principal’s office. His face was filled with concern. “I’ve found one of our students outside the back gate,” he said. “He looks injured.” Maya and Ethan froze. Their eyes met. Only one thought crossed their minds. Was it Daniel?
