Chapter Four – Playing the Part
Julia realized she had been doing it all wrong. Running, begging, leaving clues—those were mistakes. If she wanted to win, she had to stop thinking like prey and start thinking like him.
The morning after Daniel found her note, Julia forced herself to act normal. She brewed the coffee, scrambled the eggs, buttered the toast. She even hummed a tune as she set his plate down, as if she were truly the happy wife he wanted her to be.
Daniel studied her carefully from across the table, sipping his coffee. His eyes scanned her face, her hands, every little movement.
And Julia let him. She even smiled when his gaze lingered.
Inside, her heart pounded. But she didn’t let it show.
