Chapter 17 Having Jill stay in his hotel room wasn’t what he’d expected. He figured he was still reeling from the little bomb she’d dropped on him. The ache in his chest was still there the next morning as he realized what he’d done—no, what he’d set in motion, believing at the time that it was what he wanted. He heard the shower running as he sat on the edge of the bed, his bare feet on the dated carpet and his cell phone on the bedside table, and all he could think was that the woman he really cared for had run out of his room the night before because of Jill, because of something he’d done. “Well, you really screwed things this time,” he said to himself as he picked up his cell phone and saw no messages.
