-Aliauna’s POV-
It's been two days since I met Alpha Keegan and Kyle found out I’m a royal. He hasn’t asked any questions, which I'm grateful for. Mateo and I are back to our normal friendship.
There have been zero calls all day and everyone seems to be doing their own thing. It's around 11 am and, Mateo and I are currently training in the gym, all our main gear is with us in case of a call, so most of our focus is on our sparring. Just as I sweep Mateo’s feet out from under him, Eric runs in.
“A call just came in, another team is in trouble… Ali, it's bad,” he says, looking worried.
I nod, “get geared up,” I tell them, then run over to where my gear sits. First I throw on my vest which already has all my stuff clipped on, then my belt with my gun and mags.
‘There is no time to grab our swallow (double-ended sword/staff),’ Asuna says.
When I look up, Kyle and Mateo are gone, upstairs already. I sprint upstairs and bark orders as the boys finish gearing up.
“Tyler and Eric take Tyler’s truck, Mateo, Kyle you're with me. As soon as you're in the truck, turn on the video call. Got it?” Everyone gives slight nods or mumbled responses. Running outside I get in my truck and start it, the boys are thirty seconds behind me, and soon the trucks are both running, and we're pulling out of the driveway.
“Get the video call going and the coordinates,” I say to Mateo, who sits in the passenger seat. After a few seconds, Tyler and Eric pop up on the screen and I know where I’m going.
“Someone tell me what's going on and what we’re walking into,” I say to no one in particular.
“I answered the call,” Tyler starts, “it's the phoenix team, they were supposed to be taking down a small drug ring run by rogues, but turns out their intel was wrong and there were more rogues than expected. Someone called for backup, so they sent us, there are lots of places for a sniper, so Kyle can set up somewhere.”
I nod, unsure if he saw. “Mateo, can you pull up the team?”
Mateo does as asked, and soon I'm looking at four faces. The first one looks to be in his mid-twenties with shaggy brown hair and brown eyes, the next two looked to be brothers and in their early twenties, with long blond hair and blue eyes, and the last picture was of a girl about my age with shoulder-length platinum hair and teal eyes.
“Thomas Blake the team leader,” Mateo says pointing at the first picture, “the Aurtaud brothers, Vincent and Kale. And last, Esme Wattson, she’s an Alpha’s daughter.”
“Which Alpha?” Kyle asks.
“Alpha Keegan Hart, she took her mother's last name.”
‘Let's hope she’s okay, I’d like to stay on his good side and I doubt, if she died, he’d be in the mood to make friend’s’ Asuna tells me.
‘Agreed’
We pull up to the spot and immediately the stench of rogues and blood flood my senses.
“Kyle set up on that building there,” I point to a tall building, “Eric, Mateo go east, Tyler and I will go west, stay on coms, shift only if needed. Nobody die.” I say to my team before heading off, hoping the phoenix team still breathes.
Tyler and I draw our guns and head in the direction that the scent is coming from, a group of rogues round a corner and stop about ten feet in front of us. Their snarls are vicious, and they don't look happy. The rogues are quick and usually hard to hit, but my team has had extensive training and very rarely misses the target. With so many tho, it's hard, you need lots of focus to hit a target moving so fast, so Tyler and I opp for our blades.
We holster our guns and I pull my twin blades and Tyler draws his sword. We clear out the rogues quickly, but I can smell more further up ahead.
“Aliauna!” Tyler yells as a cream-coloured wolf launches at me.
I move out of the way just in time, the wolf stops a couple of feet in front of us, snarling. Her scent was not that of a rogue yet not that of a pack wolf… she's with the council. Esme Wattson.
“Esme Wattson?” I ask.
She stops for a minute before shaking her head and then continuing to snarl.
“We are with the council, I’m Aliauna Malloy, and this is Tyler Storm.”
She only continues to snarl.
‘Her wolf is in charge, she won’t listen to a normal wolf, especially one who is in human form' Asuna tells me.
Understanding what she's getting at, I let out some of my aura, attempting to focus it on Esme’s wolf and not Tyler. The she-wolf then attempts to launch at me, and Tyler tackles her. Only then does she shift back and kicks Tyler where the sun doesn’t shine. He grunts and Esme grabs one of his small blades, holding it to his throat.
Instinctively, one hand is on my gun, ready to be drawn at any moment.
“I have a shot, captain, do you want me to take it?” Kyle’s voice comes through the coms.
“No, but if you see any indication she’s going to…” I can’t bring myself to finish that sentence.
“Will do, Captain,” he responds.
“Esme, we are with the council I need you to let him go, please,” I tell her.
“How can I believe you?! How do I know you're not trying to trick me and kill me too?” this girl is terrified, she doesn’t know who she can trust, she’s lost, and I know how that feels.
“I can show you my badge, if I show you my badge, will you let him go and let us help you?” she nods erratically.
“Ok,” I let out a sigh of relief. I raise my hands, “I’m going to grab it with my right hand and keep my left hand raised,” I tell Esme exactly what I do as to not set her off and get Tyler killed. I do just as I said.
“T-toss it to me,” she stutters.
I toss it to her, and she lets go of Tyler to catch it, and he backs up and raises his hands as well. Esme looks at my badge for a moment before collapsing and dropping it along with Tyler's blade.
“My whole team is dead! They're gone! All gone…” she sobs.
I walk over to her slowly, I kick the blade over to Tyler then pick up my badge and clip it back on my belt. Tyler radios Eric and Mateo our location and the situation then tells Kyle to come down.
“It's going to be ok,” I tell Esme, who stays curled up sobbing.
It takes about two minutes for the others to get to us, and Eric places a blanket around Esme.
“Eric, I want you to take Esme to your brother's truck and sit with her. The rest of you are coming with me, we’re going to find the rest of the Phoenix team.”
After about ten minutes of searching, we stop at a building that reeks of flesh and blood. Not sensing any life around us, I put my twin blades away. We walk into the building and the scene is gruesome, the Artaud brothers are nothing but c*****e, and pieces of them lay scattered across the open floor space. Thomas Blake is dead on the ground with many injuries, the main one being a huge puncture in his gut. On his chest lays an envelope addressed to Aliauna Malloy. Tyler picks it up and gives it to me.
I gulp as I open it, inside is a card that has a single rose on the front and the words “Do I have your attention yet, Little Wolf?” on the back. I put the card back in the envelope and hand it to Tyler.
“I don’t want to see that ever again,” I whisper, then turn and run back to the truck.
I open the back door to the truck and Esme is in a sweatshirt and sweats of mine that was in my truck in case of a shift. She looks exhausted and looks at me with the hope her team still breathes.
“Esme, I’m so sorry… they’re…” before I can finish, she interrupts.
“Dead,” she whispers before passing out from exhaustion.
