Chapter Five

680 Words
MIGUEL'S POV ~ As I approached the gate of the mansion I called home, I honked my motorcycle horn to alert the security guard. I guess, he checked the gate camera because in no time he was opening the gate for me to get in. He wouldn't have opened it if it had been someone different, since he had been instructed to open the gate for family members only. I nodded in response to his greetings, and rode into the garage before heading to the house. I handed my backpack to the butler standing at the door. He greeted me, and I just nodded as I make my way upstairs to my room. I don't want to be in the living room for the servants to greet and bow to me like I'm a king. Today has been a hectic day for me, managing through lectures and checking emails from work hasn't been easy, so I don't want these to add to my frustrations. I stay alone in this big family house since all my family decided to stay abroad in California. They wanted me to live with them, especially my mom, but I decided to stay in my home country, Ghana, and build my dream company here, and they allowed it. I come from a family of seven, consisting of my parents and five children, with two older brothers, two older sisters, and I'm the youngest. On getting to my room, I went straight to my closet and picked up a sweatshirt and shorts, then went to the bathroom to freshen up. I got out after 15 minutes and decided to get some work done in my study room since I had a lot of paperwork to do and it wasn't time for dinner yet. I own a computer supply business, which I established a year ago after returning from California. I want to be a businessman, despite having a medical degree. As a renowned doctor, I'm deviating from my family's expectation, as my father insists that every child of his must earn a doctorate before pursuing other interests. I recall how my father's determination inspired me to pursue my own entrepreneurial ventures. My father, Dr. Godwin Nnamdi Eze, is a renowned orthopedic surgeon and businessman. His estimated net worth is $3.1 billion. He's the CEO and Chairman of several companies, including WBH Group (WorldBridge Hospitals) and EnergyHarbor Petroleum Development Company Ltd. His companies' headquarters are all located in California, except for the hospitals, which have their headquarters in Ghana, with locations in various places including, California. My dad is half Nigerian because his father was Nigerian and his mother is Ghanaian. My grandfather passed away due to a car accident, where he didn't receive timely medical attention. Before his last breath, he wished for my dad to become a doctor, which is why my dad wants all his children to pursue a medical degree, and in times of need, timely action can save a life, and to remind the importance of being there for one another. My dad was just 10 years old when the tragedy happened, and my grandfather's family members didn't even bother to be there for the young boy who had just lost his dad. Instead, they told him to never show his face to them again, as they didn't like his mother and blamed her for their son's death. My father did as he was told and lived in Ghana with his mother until he received a scholarship to Harvard University to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor, and later met my mom who is now Mrs. Jasmine Vaughn Eze, a Black American fashion designer, when he moved to California for his internship. Recalling my dad's life always fills me with admiration for him, and I'm not alone-my elder siblings and mom share the same pride in being his family. I miss him dearly. A knock at my bedroom door snapped me out of my reverie, and I realized I'd been lost in thought, sitting on my bed, reminiscing about my father's life.
