Chapter 4

~ Ophelia’s POV ~ I was done for. I kept saying it over and over. I can't believe I’d agreed to something deadly. A contract with a Mafia boss. Would he let me go after? Or kill me? Did Nadia know all this when she pushed me here? Or had she thrown me away like garbage? My thoughts tangled until I couldn’t breathe. “Nadia.” His thick voice trailed off. “Open. This. Door.” I shook my head as if he could see me. My knees trembling. “No!” “You will open it.” He said calmly but I wasn't falling for the calm tone in his voice, if I opened this door? That might be the end of me. I'd seen him kill a guy just now, and with no sign of empathy whatsoever, now he was pretending to be calm? “I can’t,” I whimpered. “You’ll kill me. I know you will.” “I said open.” His voice growled sending my weak knees to the floor. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry I went where I wasn’t meant to, I swear I won’t do it again!” My words tumbled out fast. “Please just… just leave me.” The door creaked than he pushed it open from outside and it flew open. Ryker stepped in, standing in front of me like a cold giant whilst his eyes were locked on mine. I'd gone cold. “Please don’t,” I whispered. “I won’t touch anything again. I’ll be good.” He walked towards me slowly. Looking at me like I was prey. I took slow steps in fear and when he had my back to the wall he whispered; “Stop shaking,” “I can’t,” I whispered back. He stared, then set the gun on the table. The sound didn't do any good to my already thumping heart. “If I wanted to hurt you, Nadia, you wouldn’t still be breathing.” “That’s not comforting,” I muttered. “Why did you run from the guards?” “Nothing.” I said almost immediately, then he came closer, lifting my chin in his big hands. “I'll ask you one last time, why did you run from the guards?” “Because. Because, I can’t live like that!” I blurted. “I’m not a prisoner. I can’t breathe with men following me everywhere.” “You are under my protection.” He growled. “I don’t want it!” I threw my arms out. “Your house is already a prison. Guards, gates, cameras. I couldn’t leave even if I tried. You’ve already trapped me.” He was silent for a while, his eyes traveling down to my large breasts that were slightly revealed. Then he leaned closer, his breathe hot on my ears. “Fine,” he whispered. “If you hate the guards so much, I’ll watch you myself.” My heart raced like a complete i***t and I was felt instantly turned on. I hated it. I hated the way he easily made me feel so miserable. “Why?” I asked finally, barely audible. “Because I don’t trust anyone else with you.” “I don’t need you to trust me. I just want to be left alone.” His smirked. “That’s not an option, bunny.” We stayed there, locked in a stare, until he pulled back. He raked a hand through his hair feeling somewhat embarrassed? “Get some rest.” He finally said, fleeing the room like he'd just commited a grave crime against himself. Rest? How could I possibly rest after what had just happened. I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, replaying his words: I’ll watch you myself. Was he serious? Was he outside my door? What did he mean by that? So many questions ran through my mind. “What do you want from me?” I whispered. “What are you planning, Ryker?” As expected I got no one to answer that question, but I swore I heard footsteps once outside my door. Like someone was standing guard. And no, it wasn't the guards, He'd long released them to my surprise, all I had to do now was press the red button he'd placed by my bedside if I ever needed the maids or help. When morning came, I was still awake, my body trembling from exhaustion. A loud bang got be springing up. “It’s time,” a voice I'd recognized as the doctor said. I gripped the sheets in fear. “Time for what?” I asked, though I already knew. “The procedure,” the doctor answered. “We’re ready.” “No…” I shook my head fast. “I don’t… I can’t, not yet.” “Yes,” Ryker's voice said firmly. “You can.” I quickly sprang up, for some strange reason even though his voice still terrified me I felt I could confide in him. “I don’t know if I can do this,” I admitted, my voice breaking. “You can.” He said. “Stop thinking so much.” “What if something goes wrong?” “It won’t.” His tone dropped lower. “I won’t let it.” Heaving a sigh of relief, I quickly got dressed and opened the door for them to come in. The doctors set up the tray. Machines, gloves and needles were all in place. And I was asked to lie on a flat table. “I can’t breathe,” I gasped. Ryker stepped forward. “Look at me.” I turned my head toward him. His eyes locked on mine. “Breathe,” he said calmly. “In. Out. That’s all.” “I’m scared,” I whispered. “You’ve been through worse,” he answered. “This is nothing compared to what you survived before.” The doctors came closer with a needle. I panicked. “Wait! What is that?” “An IV,” one replied. “It won’t hurt much.” I shook my head wildly. “No, no, I don’t want that” Ryker reached down and caught my hand. “Stop fighting. It’s small and would be over in seconds.” “Don’t leave me,” I whispered, holding onto him like my life depended on him. “I’m never leaving you.” He consoled. The needle slid in and I winced. “See?” he said. “Done.” Tears stung my eyes. “I hate this.” “I know.” He said brushing my hair. “But it’s necessary, it can't be anyone else but you, Nadia.” No one else but me, what did that mean? Why was I starting to feel a strange connection with this ruthless man, could he be feeling the same? No, there must be something more to his kindness towards me. “Why are you here?” I said, my voice cold as ice. “Because I have to be.” “That’s not an answer.” “Because if you panic, no one else can calm you.” “You think you calm me?” “You’re not screaming now, are you?” His lips twitched like he was amused. I scowled faintly. “Don’t flatter yourself.” “Then why are you still holding my hand?” he whispered into my ears. I froze, shocked but I didn't let go still. “I… I don’t know,” I admitted. “Yes, you do.” He smirked. Then he turned back to the doctors. “Get it done.” And my heart sank.
