Chapter 7: The Thought That Stayed

1060 Words
--- He didn’t go back. Not that night. Not the next. --- That was the plan. The only plan that made sense. --- Distance. Control. Silence. --- And yet— None of it worked. --- Because she didn’t leave him. --- Not physically. No. That would have been easier. --- She stayed somewhere far worse. --- In his mind. --- Lucien stood at the edge of the rooftop again, the city stretched beneath him in dim lights and distant noise. Cold wind moved around him, sharp and restless. He didn’t feel it. --- “…This is nothing,” he muttered. --- A lie. --- Because every time he closed his eyes— He saw her. --- The way she had looked at him. Not just afraid. Not just weak. --- But curious. --- The way she hadn’t stepped back. Hadn’t run. Hadn’t done what every human should have done. --- And worse— The way she had touched him. --- His jaw tightened sharply. --- His hand lifted unconsciously— Pressing against his chest. --- The place where her fingers had rested. --- There was nothing there. No heartbeat. No life. --- And yet— Something had reacted. Something that shouldn’t exist. --- “…Pathetic.” --- The word came out colder this time. More certain. --- He turned away from the edge. Ready to leave. Ready to end this— --- And then— He stopped. --- A sound. --- Soft. Familiar. --- A heartbeat. --- His entire body went still. --- No. --- That wasn’t possible. --- Too far. Too faint. Too— --- Real. --- His head turned slowly. His gaze narrowing. --- And there— Across the street below— --- Her. --- Elara. --- Walking. --- Alone. --- His jaw tightened instantly. --- “…No.” --- The word came out sharp. Immediate. --- Because this— This wasn’t coincidence. --- Or maybe it was. --- And that made it worse. --- She walked slower than before. Still weak. Still recovering. --- But she was outside. Again. --- His gaze darkened. --- “…You never learn.” --- But his feet— They had already moved. --- --- Elara didn’t know why she was here. --- She had told herself she just needed air. Just needed space. Just needed to clear her head. --- But that wasn’t the truth. --- The truth was— She had been thinking about him. --- Constantly. --- His voice. His eyes. The way he had looked at her— Like she was something fragile. And dangerous. At the same time. --- Her fingers tightened slightly around her coat. --- “…Lucien,” she whispered under her breath. --- The name felt strange. Soft. Wrong. --- And yet— She didn’t stop saying it. --- Because something about it— Stayed. --- Her steps slowed. --- A strange feeling crept over her. --- Like she wasn’t alone. --- Her breath shifted slightly. Her eyes lifting. --- Scanning. --- Nothing. --- But still— Something felt off. --- “…You’re here,” she said quietly. --- Not a question. --- A statement. --- --- Lucien froze. --- Completely. --- Hidden in shadow. Silent. Unseen. --- But not unknown. --- His gaze locked onto her. Sharp. Unforgiving. --- “…You shouldn’t do that,” he whispered. --- She couldn’t hear him. --- But somehow— She stilled. --- Like something in her responded anyway. --- Her heart— It changed. --- Faster now. --- Stronger. --- Calling to him again. --- His throat tightened. --- That same hunger— Returning. --- But it wasn’t alone anymore. --- Something else was there. --- Something quieter. More dangerous. --- “…Go home,” he muttered. --- His body didn’t move. --- Didn’t leave. --- Didn’t obey. --- --- Elara turned slightly. --- Her gaze stopping on an empty space. --- Or what should have been empty. --- “…I know you’re there,” she said softly. --- Her voice wasn’t strong. --- But it wasn’t afraid either. --- And that— That was the problem. --- Because now— She wasn’t running. --- She was waiting. --- --- Lucien stepped forward. --- Not fully into the light. --- But enough. --- Enough for her to see him. --- Her breath caught. --- But she didn’t step back. --- Of course she didn’t. --- “…You shouldn’t be here,” he said quietly. --- His voice lower than before. More controlled. But not stable. --- Her lips parted slightly. --- “…Neither should you.” --- Silence. --- Heavy. --- His gaze darkened. --- “…You’re getting reckless.” --- “Or honest,” she replied softly. --- That— That made something snap tighter inside him. --- His steps closed the distance. --- Not fully. --- But closer than before. --- Too close. --- “…You keep coming back,” she whispered. --- His jaw tightened. --- “…No.” --- A lie. --- Her eyes held his. --- “…Then why are you here?” --- The question lingered. --- Sharp. --- Unavoidable. --- Because this time— He didn’t have an answer. --- And that— That was worse than anything. --- His gaze dropped again. --- To her neck. --- That pulse. --- Still there. Still alive. Still calling. --- His control strained again. --- “…Stop saying my name,” he said quietly. --- “I didn’t,” she replied. --- A pause. --- “…yet.” --- His entire body stilled. --- Because now— He knew she would. --- And when she did— --- He wouldn’t stop. --- That truth settled heavily inside him. --- Dark. Certain. Unavoidable. --- His gaze lifted slowly back to hers. --- “…If you say it again—” --- He stepped closer. --- This time— Too close. --- Close enough to feel her breath. --- Close enough to hear every heartbeat. --- Close enough to lose control. --- His voice dropped. Lower. More dangerous than ever before. --- “…this ends.” --- Her breath caught. --- But she didn’t move. --- Didn’t run. --- Didn’t look away. --- Instead— Her lips parted slowly. --- And in a whisper— Barely sound— --- “…Lucien.” --- Silence. --- Complete. --- Deadly. --- His control shattered. ---
