My mother was seething but wasn’t about to show her hand more than she had to. Oh no, your father didn’t mention it and you didn’t tell me either sweetie. Mom I told Dad yesterday and you weren’t home. Is it a problem that I have one person I know here? Unfortunately, I am just not prepared to have extra people since we planned for the ones present already. Well, mom I mean I don’t even know your partners so I feel like this one guest of mine should be acceptable.
She grits through her teeth trying not to lose her composure in front of the gathering crowd. Excuse me ma’am is there an issue with tonight? A man I have seen at every birthday party I have had. No Lance everything is fine. I was going over the details with my daughter. He seemed upset about her response but didn’t dare speak again. Give us some privacy a minute please she asks. They walk away as if her order was law and they had no will to differ.
Once they left she looked over at Va-Lara and asked, how long do you plan to stay at my house? Mom, I can’t believe you are being so rude to my friend. I look at Va-Lara and tell her maybe it would be better if we celebrated “MY” birthday somewhere more inviting. My mom’s face morphs into anger and then a blank face like a cold stone emotionless killer. After all, we have done to plan this night for you. You would leave over one insignificant person you just met.
Yes, Mom, I would because I would like to celebrate my birthday with friends and family. People I know, love and care about, not your business partners or anyone with a bad attitude that is gonna ruin my day. I don’t know where my sudden courage came from but I was not backing down. I knew she planned to kill me and all my dreams were starting to become believable. Va-Lara knew something was wrong I could feel it but she was quiet.
She was smart and waiting for me to give her direction. Her eyes stay on my mother like she’s watching a predator toy with its prey. My mom huffs very well if you must have her stay then she is welcome to stay. Mom, I’m sure by now you have made her feel pretty unwelcome so we are gonna step out to talk. You should probably go to entertain your partners so they don’t miss you too much.
With a scowl on her face, her hawk-like eyes scan me and then Va-Lara before heading back outside. I nod at Va-Lara with my finger over my lips silently asking her to be quiet. We walk outside and I state a bit louder than normal, let me help you with your stuff. Where did you park? She nods her head and we start walking down the road. I saw that I wasn’t the only one who had to hike to my party.
She laughs but I see it’s not entirely real almost for show. She stumbles and I reach to catch her when she whispers so low I almost don’t catch it, we are being watched. Then she speaks in a normal voice, thanks girl that would have hurt. I laugh nodding, yeah I know but I’m sure I would have checked on you first before I laughed. She busts out in a real laugh this time, reaching her little red six-speed Jetta. I go around to the back door on one side when she leans into the other door opposite.
Keeping my voice very low I tell her we need an exit strategy before the party ends. I found out some information about tonight and we need to leave, but making it look real. I can come up with that but where are we going? Is this a get-out-of-the-house plan or a get-out-of-dodge plan? I need to get out of dodge and I have no plan. Let’s grab a few bags of snacks and that bag of clothes. We close the doors and I tell Va-Lara that we need to get some supplies from my Jeep. Walking over I unlock my door and grab all my money, and Identification. Pocketing those discreetly, I grab all the chocolate she gave me earlier and wink at her.
We headed back in heading to my room and I’m sure I saw a face I never wanted to see spying on us outside. Once in my room, I texted Va-Lara that Dorthy was stalking me outside. She nodded but didn’t reply, almost like she suspected we would be overheard. She grabs my phone and takes my case off. Opening the SIM card slot there is a chip sitting on top of my SIM card. I put my hand over my mouth to quiet my reaction.
She digs into her bag and shows me a new card and in notes on her phone she types after we leave we will change it, I’m being bugged and so is my Jeep. She then shows me pictures of Dorthy putting something under my Jeep, then the next picture is of the device she had placed under my Jeep. On the note screen she types, Dorthy works for your mother. She was looking Va-Lara in the face to read her expression and see the truth. She knows what’s going on, so she isn’t questioning me leaving.
We need to head down to the party and have fun, she states out loud for everyone listening. Heading down we chat and giggle about how bad my roommate is and what’s happening at work. Heading outside we are arm in arm walking to the punch table. My mom is speaking in a hushed voices but I can hear her anyway. She’s back we go as planned if she is to awaken tonight and if not we wait till she’s alone. The other one will need to be taken care of if the former happens.
Like hell you will I think to myself and I’m scared that whatever they are waiting on I will have no control over it. We walk around eating and talking among ourselves until the creep Lance comes to make conversation. I grin and talk with him playing my part as well as I can. It’s about six pm now and we are about to finally do cake and gifts. This party is coming to an end but I’m kinda feeling strange so I head to the bathroom asking Va-Lara to come with giggling about some hot guys we saw in school.
I tell her we need to go I’m feeling weird and her eyes widen just a little in acknowledgment. After I used the bathroom we went back to the party. Mom walks up to us and starts complaining about me not spending time with my other guests. Va-Lara suddenly vomits on my mother. I internally snicker, that’s what she deserves. Oh my goodness I am so, “vomits again” Sorry. What the hell is wrong with you? My mother starts screeching at her.
I look at my mother embarrassed by her behavior and I tell her. I cannot believe you are screaming at my guest for being sick. Looking at the crowd I announced that I was sorry to leave but my friend fell ill and I would be driving her home. Oh yeah, Mom didn’t like that either. No absolutely not! Nobody invited her. She can leave the same way she came, on her own.
Umm, you may have forgotten Mom, but I invited her to my party so yes ma’am I’m responsible for her plus I’m not sure what’s wrong with everyone today but I would rather deal with Va-Lara’s vomit and my crazy-ass roommate than spend five more minutes here. My dad goes to speak but instead closes his mouth and ducks back into the house.
