Chapter One: A Night That Changed Everything

699 Words
The scent of freshly baked bread filled the tiny bakery, but it did little to mask the bitterness in the air. Claire Williams wiped the sweat from her forehead and glanced at the nearly empty display case. The loaves of bread that once sold out by noon now sat untouched even as the evening light faded through the window. Her mother, Mrs. Williams, was still smiling as she arranged cookies on a tray, pretending not to notice the day’s poor sales. “Maybe tomorrow will be better,” her mother said softly, her tone more hopeful than confident. Claire forced a smile. “Yeah… maybe.” The bakery had been their family’s pride for over ten years, but lately, debts were piling up. Rent, suppliers, taxes—everything seemed to come all at once. Claire had picked up extra shifts at a café nearby just to keep them afloat, yet it never seemed enough. When her mother finally went to rest upstairs, Claire slumped behind the counter, her phone buzzing with messages. Tina: Girl, we’re going out tonight. Don’t say no again. Maya: You need to relax. Just one night. Please! Claire hesitated. She hadn’t gone out in months. Between work and bills, “fun” felt like a foreign word. But maybe, just for tonight, she needed a break—from stress, from worry, from everything. She typed back, Fine. I’ll come. The city lights shimmered like scattered diamonds as the three women entered Velvet Lounge, a high-end bar on the east side. The music was soft, the drinks expensive, and the people even more so. Claire felt out of place in her simple black dress, but her friends didn’t seem to care. “Cheers!” Tina said, raising her glass. “To surviving another week!” Claire laughed and clinked her glass against theirs. The drink burned her throat, but the warmth that followed was comforting. One drink became two, then three, and soon the laughter came easier, the music louder, and the room blurrier. By the time she stood up to leave, her head was spinning. “I’ll… I’ll just find my room,” she mumbled, swaying slightly. “Room? Claire, you’re not—” Maya started, but Claire had already stumbled toward the hotel section attached to the bar. Somewhere down the hall, Austin Blake leaned against the wall, unbuttoning his shirt collar. The night had been long, filled with tedious meetings and fake smiles. His family name carried weight—The Blakes, owners of one of the biggest conglomerates in the city—but it also carried chains. “Sir, your suite is ready,” his assistant, Damien, said, handing him a key card. Austin nodded and dismissed him. He wanted nothing more than sleep and silence. The pressure to find a wife—to settle down for business alliances—had been constant lately. His father’s voice still echoed in his mind: “You’re thirty-two, Austin. It’s time to stop playing games.” Claire’s heels clicked unsteadily against the marble floor as she searched for her room. “306… 308… or was it 306?” she muttered, squinting at the key card. Her vision doubled, and before she knew it, she pushed open a door—room 308. The lights were dim. The air smelled faintly of cologne and whiskey. “Sorry—” she began, but her words slurred into a whisper. Austin looked up from where he sat on the couch, half-drunk and half-asleep. He blinked, confused. The woman standing at his door looked like a dream—disheveled, nervous, and impossibly beautiful. “Are you… lost?” he asked, voice low and rough. Claire’s lips parted, but no sound came. Her heart raced. The room swayed. Before she could respond, her knees buckled, and Austin instinctively caught her. “Hey, hey—careful,” he murmured, guiding her toward the bed. Her eyes fluttered open briefly. “I’m sorry… I think… wrong room…” He chuckled softly. “It’s fine. You’re safe.” The next few moments blurred into silence, then warmth, then darkness—an unplanned night neither of them would remember clearly, but one that would change everything.
