Damien lowered his phone and slipped it into the pocket of his coat. The cold mountain wind swept across the narrow trail, carrying flakes of snow that disappeared into the darkness. No one spoke for several seconds.
Aria watched him carefully.
She had never seen his expression look so distant.
“What did she say?” she asked softly.
Damien looked toward the mountains before answering.
“She wants me to believe I’ve already lost.”
“The Crimson Queen?”
He nodded.
“She said Blackwood International is falling apart while I’m away.”
Lucas sighed.
“That explains the board meeting.”
Gabriel folded the map and slipped it into his backpack.
“They planned this well.”
