Chapter 3: Shadows of Rejection

MARGIE'S POV I sank into the worn cushions of the couch, my body trembling with the weight of Xavier's words. His voice still echoed in my mind, cruel and unrelenting: "You're not worthy of me." The phrase was a dagger to my chest, twisting deeper with every heartbeat. How could someone so powerful, so majestic, be so cruel? And yet, wasn't that why I admired him? Xavier was untouchable, commanding, and ruthless. But his words had stripped me bare, exposing every insecurity I tried so desperately to hide. Tears burned trails down my cheeks, hot and relentless. I pulled my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around them like a shield, but no embrace could protect me from the shame that burned inside me. I had dared to hope. Dared to believe that maybe, just maybe, he saw something in me. But he had looked at me like I was dirt beneath his boots, something to be swept aside and forgotten. The memory of his piercing gaze sent a fresh wave of anguish crashing over me. I let out a shaky sob, my body curling in on itself. No one had ever made me feel as small, as insignificant, as Xavier had in those brief, devastating moments. I tried to silence the sobs, to swallow the lump in my throat, but the pain was too much. It clawed at me, a relentless storm that wouldn't let up. "You're not worthy." The words wouldn't stop replaying, an endless loop of torment. My chest heaved as I fought for air, the room spinning around me. Why did I ever think I could be anything to him? Xavier was the Alpha King-power incarnate. And I was just... me. Ordinary, mortal, fragile. A nobody. Exhaustion crept in as the hours dragged on, the fire in the hearth dwindling to embers. My sobs quieted, leaving only the hollow ache in my chest. I lay on the couch, staring blankly at the ceiling, feeling utterly drained. The tears had run dry, but the pain remained, a constant, gnawing presence. I closed my eyes, wishing for oblivion, for sleep to take me away from the crushing weight of my emotions. Finally, as the first light of dawn crept through the curtains, I drifted off, my dreams haunted by the memory of Xavier's cruel rejection. THIRD POV: Felipe trudged through the dense forest, his mind a whirlwind of turmoil. Xavier's words still echoed in his head, sharp and unforgiving. He had seen his Alpha King in many moods-commanding, aloof, even cruel-but tonight, there had been something darker, something unrelenting in the way Xavier had spoken to Margie. Felipe shook his head, trying to rid himself of the image of her tear-streaked face. He had always thought of Xavier as a leader with vision and strength, but tonight had left a sour taste in his mouth. Yet he knew better than to question his Alpha King openly. That was a line no one dared to cross. The trees pressed closer as he neared the edge of the forest, their shadows twisting under the pale moonlight. The scent of pine and damp earth was faintly comforting, but it did little to quell his unease. Finally, the sight of his cabin brought a flicker of relief. The wooden structure stood sturdy amidst the wilderness, a warm glow spilling from its windows. Inside, Paris awaited him-his mate, his safe haven in a world of chaos. Felipe pushed the door open, slamming it shut behind him as though he could lock away the night's events. Paris stood in the small living room, her dark eyes scanning his face with concern. Her beauty was understated but striking, her dark curls framing her face, her slender frame radiating warmth. She stepped forward, her voice soft and probing. "Felipe... what's wrong?" He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he crossed the room in two long strides, pulling her into a fierce embrace. His body trembled slightly as he buried his face in her shoulder, inhaling her familiar scent. "Talk to me," she whispered, her hands gently stroking his back. Felipe didn't respond with words. Instead, he kissed her, pouring all his frustration, fear, and longing into that one desperate act. Paris froze for a moment, startled by his intensity, but then she melted into him, her lips parting to deepen the kiss. They stumbled backward, their movements instinctive and urgent. Felipe's hands roamed over her body, seeking solace in her warmth. Paris arched into him, her fingers tangling in his hair, her soft moans filling the space between them. They fell onto the bed in a tangle of limbs, their bodies moving together with a rhythm born of love and need. For a moment, Felipe felt the weight of the world lift from his shoulders. In Paris's arms, he found a fleeting sense of peace. But it didn't last. Just as he began to lose himself in her, a sharp jolt pierced his mind. The familiar, commanding voice of Xavier echoed in his thoughts. "Felipe." He froze, his body going rigid against Paris. "Yes, Alpha King?" "Felipe?" she murmured, her voice laced with confusion. He closed his eyes, willing the intrusion to disappear. "Come to my office. Now." Xavier's tone was cold, brooking no argument. Felipe swallowed hard, dread pooling in his stomach. "As you command, Alpha" "I have to go," he said quietly, his voice strained. Paris propped herself up on her elbows, her eyes narrowing with concern. "Go? Now? What's going on?" Felipe didn't meet her gaze. "It's Xavier," he muttered. "He's summoned me." She sighed, frustration flickering across her face, but she didn't press him further. They both knew what defying the Alpha King would mean. "Be careful," she said softly, her voice tinged with worry. Felipe nodded, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead before standing and grabbing his jacket. As he stepped out into the cold night, the warmth of Paris's embrace already felt like a distant memory. The journey back to the castle was a blur, his mind racing with possibilities. What did Xavier want now? Why had he summoned him so suddenly? Felipe couldn't shake the feeling that whatever awaited him wouldn't end well. Xavier sat in his office, staring blankly at the flickering flames in the hearth. His mind was a whirlwind of irritation and contempt, the memory of Margie's pitiful vulnerability clinging to him like a stubborn stain. Weak. Disgusting. He hated her kind-the ones who dared to reach above their station, thinking they could matter in his world. The sound of the door opening broke his thoughts. Hazel entered, her presence commanding yet alluring. Her gown of deep emerald silk clung to her hourglass figure, its plunging neckline leaving little to the imagination. Her golden hair fell in cascading waves, and her sharp, predatory smile held a promise of wicked intent. "Alpha," she purred, shutting the door with a soft click. Her voice was smooth, almost musical, as though she spoke every word with the intent to seduce. Xavier didn't turn to face her. Instead, he swirled the dark liquid in his glass, his sharp jawline illuminated by the firelight. "What do you want, Hazel?" he asked, his voice cold and sharp like a blade. Hazel moved closer, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. "I'm here because I care," she said, her tone a mockery of sincerity. She stopped just behind him, her fingers ghosting over his tense shoulders. "You seem... troubled." Xavier scoffed, setting the glass down with a sharp clink. "Don't flatter yourself with the idea that you know me." Hazel chuckled softly, leaning in until her breath brushed his ear. "Oh, but I do," she whispered, her voice dripping with seduction. "I know what you need, Xavier." He turned abruptly, his icy gaze meeting hers. For a fleeting moment, the intensity of his stare made even Hazel falter. "What I need," he said, his tone venomous, "is for you to stop pretending you're anything more than a distraction." Hazel tilted her head, her smile unwavering. "A distraction you welcome more often than not," she countered, her fingers lightly tracing the line of his jaw. Xavier grabbed her wrist in a flash, his grip firm and unyielding. "Know your place," he growled. Hazel's smile grew wider, a glimmer of amusement in her eyes. She thrived on his darkness, finding his cruelty intoxicating. "Oh, Alpha," she said, her voice like honey, "you and I both know I'm exactly where I belong." Xavier released her with a sneer, stepping away as though her touch repulsed him. He turned his back to her, his piercing eyes scanning the firelight. "You're here because I allow it," he said flatly. "Don't mistake my tolerance for affection." Hazel moved to the edge of his desk, sitting gracefully and crossing her long legs. Her gown slid up slightly, revealing just enough to keep Xavier's eyes on her. "Of course, my Alpha," she said, feigning obedience. Xavier ignored her, his expression darkening as he mindlinked Felipe. The connection was instantaneous, his thoughts invading the other man's mind with an almost physical force. "Felipe," Xavier's voice resonated, cold and commanding. Felipe's reply came immediately, hesitant but dutiful. "Yes, Alpha King?" "Come to my office," Xavier ordered. His tone left no room for argument. "Now." There was a brief pause, then Felipe's reluctant response. "As you command, Alpha." Xavier cut the connection sharply, his lip curling in disdain. He poured himself another drink, the liquid swirling in the glass like liquid fire. Hazel watched him intently, her amusement growing. "Felipe?" she asked, her voice light with curiosity. "What has the Chief Commander done to deserve your wrath this time?" Xavier's eyes narrowed as he took a slow sip. "He's weak," he said simply, his voice dripping with disgust. Hazel smirked. "Weakness doesn't seem like him. He's loyal, devoted... perhaps too much so?" Xavier turned to her, his gaze piercing. "Loyalty without strength is worthless," he said coldly. "Felipe is slipping, and I won't tolerate failure from anyone, least of all him." Hazel leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand as she studied him. "You're always so harsh, Xavier," she said, her tone teasing. "You should learn to relax. Let me help you." Xavier's jaw tightened, his patience wearing thin. "You mistake my tolerance for indulgence," he said, his voice razor-sharp. "Don't overstep." Hazel sighed dramatically, sliding off the desk and walking towards the window. "You're no fun tonight," she said, her tone playful. "I'll stay and watch, though. Felipe's misery might provide some entertainment." Xavier didn't reply, his thoughts already moving toward the confrontation ahead. Felipe had dared to test his patience, and Xavier would ensure the man remembered his place. Hazel, meanwhile, lounged by the window, her sharp eyes glinting with amusement as she awaited the show. Felipe approached the grand doors of Xavier's office, his heart pounding with each step. The castle loomed over him, an ominous structure drenched in the moon's pale glow. Inside, the air was heavy, the silence broken only by the sound of his boots echoing against the stone floor. He hesitated briefly before knocking, his knuckles brushing against the polished wood. "Enter," Xavier's cold, commanding voice called out. Felipe pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was dimly lit, shadows flickering across the walls from the flames in the fireplace. Xavier sat behind an imposing mahogany desk, his expression unreadable. Hazel stood to his right, leaning against the edge of the desk, her lips curled in a sly, knowing smile. Felipe bowed low, his eyes fixed on the floor. "Alpha King," he said, his voice steady despite the tension coiled in his chest. "Luna Hazel." Hazel chuckled softly, her voice dripping with mockery. "Always so formal, Felipe." Xavier's sharp gaze pinned him in place. "Enough," he said curtly, and Hazel fell silent, though her smile remained. Xavier leaned back in his chair, his piercing eyes never leaving Felipe. "Do you know why you're here?" Felipe swallowed hard. "No, Alpha King." Xavier's lips curled into a sneer. "Lying doesn't suit you, Felipe." Felipe's breath hitched, but he forced himself to stand tall. "I would never lie to you, Alpha." Xavier stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. His towering presence was intimidating, his dark aura filling the room. "I'm losing patience," Xavier said, his voice low and dangerous. "Why were you so protective of that... girl?" Felipe stiffened. "Margie?" he asked cautiously. "Don't say her name in my presence!" Xavier snapped, his voice like a whip. He began to pace, his movements sharp and restless. "She's weak. Insignificant. A mere mortal who dares to think she's worthy of me." Felipe clenched his fists at his sides, his nails biting into his palms. He knew better than to speak, but his silence seemed to irritate Xavier even more. "You defied me," Xavier said, his tone colder now. "You chose to defend someone beneath us, someone who doesn't even belong in our world. Explain yourself." Felipe's mind raced as he tried to find the right words. "Alpha King," he began carefully, "I wasn't defending her in the way you think. I was only trying to diffuse the situation. She's... fragile, and I thought it best not to escalate things." "Fragile?" Xavier echoed, his eyes narrowing. "You mean pathetic. Weaklings like her don't deserve our mercy. They exist to be used and discarded." Hazel laughed softly, a cruel sound that sent a chill down Felipe's spine. "Perhaps Felipe has a soft spot for weaklings," she said, her voice laced with mockery. She sauntered closer to him, her hips swaying provocatively. "Is that it, Felipe? Do you enjoy playing savior to broken little things?" Felipe gritted his teeth, forcing himself to remain calm. "With all due respect, Luna, my loyalty is to the Alpha King and this pack. I have no personal interest in her." Xavier's expression darkened, his eyes gleaming with suspicion. "You expect me to believe that?" Felipe met his gaze, his heart pounding. "Yes, Alpha King. I swear it." The room fell silent, the tension so thick it was suffocating. Then Xavier's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Perhaps you need a reminder of your place," he said. Felipe stiffened. "Alpha?" "You're suspended from your duties as Chief Commander," Xavier announced, his voice icy. "For one month. During that time, you will reflect on where your loyalties lie." Felipe's stomach dropped. "Alpha King, please-" "Silence!" Xavier roared, his voice reverberating through the room. "You will not question me again, Felipe. Leave my sight before I decide to make your punishment permanent." Felipe bowed low, his chest tight with anger and humiliation. "Yes, Alpha King," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. He turned and left the room, his steps heavy with frustration and defeat. As the door closed behind him, Hazel sauntered over to Xavier, her eyes gleaming with delight. "You're so harsh," she said, her tone teasing. "It's quite... exhilarating." Xavier poured himself another drink, his expression unreadable. "He deserved worse," he said simply. Hazel laughed, draping herself across his desk. "You're such a tyrant," she said, her voice softening. "But that's what makes you so irresistible." Xavier didn't reply, his thoughts already moving beyond Felipe. He had more pressing matters to attend to-chief among them, ensuring that no one, not even a weakling like Margie, dared to disrupt his control again. Margie sat quietly in her room, her thoughts swirling in confusion and self-doubt. She had always known her place in the pack-weak, insignificant, dismissed by those with power. But after the rejection by Xavier, something had shifted within her. His words echoed in her mind, but instead of breaking her, they sparked a fire. She had always been seen as a vulnerable pawn, someone to be controlled and discarded. But now, Margie wondered if she was more than that. Maybe the pain of his rejection, the coldness of his cruelty, was meant to show her the truth: she was capable of more. She wasn't powerless. She didn't have to stay in the shadows, waiting for scraps of attention from a monster who never cared about her. I am not weak, she thought, the weight of her newfound realization settling heavily on her chest. I am not just a victim. For the first time in a long while, she began to see herself differently-not as someone who existed merely to be used, but as someone who could change the course of her fate. The storm within her grew, and she silently vowed that Xavier would never define her again.
