Chapter Nine —
That night, Emily couldn't sleep.
She sat on her bedroom floor, surrounded by photographs.
A sister.
A living father.
A mysterious Noah.
A woman who supposedly disappeared.
And a mother who had apparently spent eighteen years hiding the truth.
At 2:14 a.m., her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Emily answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a girl's voice.
"Emily?"
Emily sat upright.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Madison."
Emily's heart began pounding.
"Madison what?"
The girl hesitated.
"Carter."
Emily stopped breathing.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because they're listening."
"Who?"
The girl began crying.
Then she whispered:
"Your father."
Emily's blood ran cold.
"What about him?"
"He's looking for you."
"Why?"
The call went silent.
Then Madison said:
"Because you're the only one who can open the door."
"What door?"
Before Madison could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A man's voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Emily."
She dropped the phone.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it every night in her dreams.
Her father's voice.
The next morning, Noah arrived at Emily's house.
He didn't knock.
He simply stood outside the window.
Emily opened it.
"How did you get here?"
"Your mother called me."
