“Okay,” he said. “This is what I’m willing to offer: You can have Dr. McAllister’s job, but it will be an interim position, only. The Board will go berserk, but I’ll present it as a temporary, clerical position. Present it as if I’m running the Hospital. They will vote you out at the first meeting. But I’ll find an excuse to cancel that meeting. That will give us several more months together. You’ll still be in the driver’s seat. By then, hopefully, they will have forgotten, as long as things are running smoothly. We might be able to squeeze out a few more months. Then I’ll have to replace you. But you’ll have perhaps, in all, twelve months as Director of Medical Services and a glowing letter of recommendation from me. You may choose to stay on, or sample the waters, eithe
