Chapter Sixteen The road ahead was deserted and Tommy felt the pressure build in her chest. She had lost them. The abandoned gas station was coming up, fast on her right. She saw the black skid mark on the pavement. She would have noticed it before. It was new. She stomped the brakes and pulled over but there was nothing. Tommy lowered her window and listened. Nothing but the wind working at the weeds. She felt sick to her stomach, perspiration trickled down her neck and her blouse stuck to the back of her shoulders. She put the car into gear and moved forward. Something glimmered from the pavement; the sun catching and reflecting from some foreign shape. Tommy stopped and got out to look.
