The kitchen was filled by sun rays as the dawn was breaking over the treetops surrounding the estate. The storm had rolled by and the grass outside was covered in morning dew. It was a beautiful morning indeed.
“Honey,” Isabelle whispered looking into Kane’s eyes.
“Do you want some honey with your pancakes?” Kane asked.
She shook her head as she answered, “Your eyes, they look like honey in sun’s light. It’s beautiful.” Then as if nothing she looked back down at her plate as she started rolling another pancake between her fingers.
Kane was extremely grateful that no one else was in the kitchen with them as he felt a blush spreading across his face. “A blush! Am I a freakin’ schoolgirl?!” He thought to himself still speechless.
Kane’s eyes trailed over Isabelle’s body as he watched her eagerly scoffing down the food. The way she ate was messy, but like everything else about her, in a cute way. Jam on her cheek, fingers and running down her arm all the way down to her elbow. She didn’t use the knife and fork that he had set down for her. But he didn’t mind that. For all he cared she could eat that way for the rest of their lives.
She was wearing his sisters’ old sundress back from when she was thirteen or fourteen. It still amazed him how small Isabelle was. She would be considered tiny in human standards but even more so for werewolves. She’s miniature. Like a doll.
As she was finishing the last pancake on her plate, Dora ran into the kitchen, coming back from her daily morning jog.
“Jesus, woman, how much can you eat!” she teased playfully.
Kane was about to chase her out but instead was surprised by Isabelle’s quick answer.
“A lot. I was really hungry.”
Both Dora and Kane burst out laughing as Isa big eyed looked from one to another not realizing what an understatement of the year this was. She had eaten double of what Kane did. And was still reaching to fill her plate for the third time.
“Are you ready for the drills?” Dora asked Kane while whipping of tears that had escaped her eyes in laughter. “Isabelle, would you like join us in combat training?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Dora. She needs time to recover. Not to mention the fact that she’s half the size of most of our fighters!”
“I will fight.” Isabella answered, her voice suddenly serious. “You fight, or you die.”
Both were stunned by her answer. They had realized that she didn’t completely understand what Dora had asked. She looked as if she was mentally preparing for a battle. Her eyes now darkened like the sea in a storm. And they looked just as wild and unpredictable. Like she could sink ships with a single glance.
“We don’t fight to kill,” Kane said softly, pulling her chair closer to him and draping one arm over her shoulder in a protective gesture. “We train, so we are better at fighting.”
“You train… to fight?” her eyebrows knit together in confusion once again. One of her facial expressions that Kane had already fallen in love with. “If you don’t know how, I can teach you. No problem.” She pats him on an arm and gives him a bit toothy grin as she once again carelessly digs into her breakfast.
“I love you!” Dora bursts out laughing once again, “Kane, we’re meeting in half an hour, make sure you’ll be there. It’s your first day as the alpha, everyone’s already gathered,” she finishes while leaving the kitchen.
“Well, I guess you’ll be joining the training then, miss!” Kane says as he looks at Isa eagerly licking her fingers.
“I go where you go,” she smiles as she kisses the tip of his nose and with that he knows that it’s going to be a very long day.
