The Luna has been locked in the guest room with Isa for the past couple of hours which had already felt like an eternity to Kane. He hasn't left the door even for a moment. Wanting to be as close to his mate as possible, even with a wall separating them, it gave him a certain calming feeling knowing she's just a couple of feet away. Dora has been coming and going with shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and different items of clothing; first she had with her something that she had newly bought for herself, than some of her old clothes from when she was younger. Kane didn’t really fancy the thought of seeing Isa in his kid sisters’ clothes, but anything was better than that blanket she had wrapped around herself. Even the thought of other men seeing her like that was making his blood boil. He has dated a couple of girls before, but such strong feeling of jealousy and possessiveness was a completely new and uncharted territory for him. Everyone knows that the mate bond is strong, but nothing could prepare him for this. How could one be so completely bewitched by a person they had just met? The door cracked open again, pulling Kane out of his though, as both Dora and Luna emerged from the guest room.
“She’s sleeping now, poor thing,” Luna whispered. “She must have been exhausted from the nights events.”
“Not to mention- hungry!” Dora blurts out. “The girl could eat a horse!”
“Manners, young lady!” Luna hushes her quickly. “Would you mind joining me at the study, Kane, we have lots to discuss.” She adds, turning her attention to Kane.
“Will she be alright?” he hesitates, still not able to pull his eyes from the door. “We should leave someone to stand guard, just in case she needs anything.”
“In case she needs something, or in case the girl comes to her senses about how foolish her mate is and tries to escape this madhouse?” Luna questions as she crosses her arms over her chest, eyebrow raised as she playfully mocks Kane. She turns without waiting for her son to argue any further and heads towards the study. “Dora be a dear and watch over our guest. You know, just in case Isa needs something.” She adds the last lighthearted jab.
Kane follows her without even trying to argue any further. Whatever his mother wanted to discuss, must be important and even being as worked up as he was right now, he knew better than to be stubborn. That’s not a good quality for an Alpha to have. He had learned that a long ago. One thing he had promised himself, was that he would never follow the example that his father had set. No matter how strong and feared he was, he never had the trust or loyalty of his pack. That in the end was his undoing. No one stepped in as Kane was ripping his throat open. This was going to happen either by his hand or by someone else’s and everyone was better off by it happening sooner rather than later.
As they entered the study, Luna gestured to Kane towards his father’s chair.
“That is your place now.” She said, corners of her lips curling up slightly. She was, after all finally happy. This was always meant to be. No matter how hard she had tried to love her children’s father, he would always find a way to destroy her resolve. He was a lousy partner, a terrible father and in the very least an incompetent Alpha. It was amazing how no one had challenged him before their son did. It must be fated that Isa had showed up when she did. Everyone knew who was really leading the pack for the past five years. They knew who had secured their position as the strongest and most feared pack in the Americas. “You deserve this more than anyone in the world, certainly more than your father ever did.”
“What’s done is done.” Kane answered as he sat down folding his hands on the desk in front of him. “You wanted to have a word?”
“Well yes. It’s about the girl.” Luna exhaled heavily. It was difficult to even begin to explain to her son what she had learned about Isa and she dreaded the thought of how awful it will be for Kane to hear what she had to say. “You have to stay calm and listen. Know that this is not going to be easy to hear.” Luna was stalling and Kane knew it.
“Just tell me, you know how much I dislike dancing around the subject.”
“Alright,” she took a deep breath before continuing. “Well, her name is Isabelle, Isa is something, I think, her mother used to call her. She is seventeen. But the girl has been on her own for a very long time, nine winters, in her own words. And I’m afraid she might have spent most of those years in her wolf form. I don’t know what happened to her, she seemed to understand everything I asked her, but she just couldn’t find the words to answer. I don’t think she has spoken to anyone in a very long time.” Luna paused, bracing for how Kane might react after what she’s about to say. “When I asked her about the scar on her left arm all she said was “revenant”. You know what that means, don’t you?”
“I know. We will need to prepare.” Kane rose from his chair and headed towards the door. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to talk to Isabelle.”
