It felt like I cried forever. At one point, Emily brought me tissues and brought the little trash can in a corner of my room over so I wouldn’t have to get up to throw the used ones away. She left the room and brought a chair in there so she could sit behind me and wrap her arms around me. I’m sure as an R.A. they gave them plenty of emotional training and how to handle those in crisis because Emily did exactly what I needed. She didn’t tell me that it was going to be okay or spout other platitudes at me, she just supported me as I experienced emotional catharsis.
When I could no longer cry, I mumbled a soft, crackly “Thanks”. Emily nodded and left the room. She quickly returned with a bottle of cold water.
“First off, you are not weak. Some vampires are late bloomers. Plus, as you said, you haven’t had a chance to start your journey of self-discovery yet. There are special rituals involved and lots of soul-searching, which is supposed to unlock your powers. I can help get you in touch with resources that will get you extra support, and luckily we have classes that late bloomers and those with special situations can enroll in to get some extra support. I will also help you whenever I can, and I know Marie and Sora will be willing to help as well. That’s what makes us different from humans-we support each other when it is needed instead of making an already weak chain weaker.” She abruptly stopped and blushed. “Sorry, bad analogy. You are not weak.” She restated.
I took all of her words in. It made sense that I hadn’t manifested any powers because they hadn’t had a reason to wake up. There were people that would help me here. My roommate-I mean my friend was going to help me, and hopefully, my other roommates would become my friends too. I took a few gulps of the water before trying to speak.
“I really appreciate your kind words. I am glad I ended up with you as a roommate, and a…a…friend.” I said hesitantly, hoping that I was not being too forward.
“Yes, Lyla. We are friends. Definitely. You are a strong woman and I definitely want a strong woman on my team. I am actually very curious to see how you blossom in a loving and supportive setting. We are going to take care of you, I promise.” Emily said with a smile, pulling me into a hug. It felt nice to be hugged, as I could not remember the last time anyone hugged me. As I said before, I never really had friends growing up, let alone boyfriends, and my mom was too depressed to hug me. I made a mental note to give Kylie a big hug the next time I saw her so she would not turn out like me.
“Lyla, we missed dinner, so I am going to run out and pick the four of us up something to eat. Luckily, I brought my car on campus and do not have a curfew-like the rest of you have, so I can actually go get us some good food. I’ll explain the curfew and all the other important rules while we eat.” Emily said.
“Oh no! I’m so sorry I kept you and the others from dinner. I hope they aren’t upset!” I exclaimed, instantly feeling guilty.
“Lyla, it’s okay. I told them what was going on and gave them the option to go to dinner without us, but they wanted to stay in support of you. I told you, we are going to take care of you.” She smiled at me and squeezed my hand.
“Here, let me put my number in your phone so you can text me what you want.” I handed her my phone and watched as she typed my number in, realizing I was starving. Emily handed me my phone back and said, “Go ahead and unpack all of your things. I will be back before you know it, and then the four of us can have dinner together. I also want you to know, you can always come to talk to me if you would like to continue our conversation from earlier. Sora and Marie will feel the same, I promise you, but sometimes it is easier to unload it all to the same person.” She gave me one more hug and headed out to get our dinner.
I took a deep breath and sat down on my bed. It was incredibly comfy, comfier than any bed I’d had before. Emily was truly a blessing. I bowed my head reverently and said a quick prayer to Nyx.
Nyx, I know I haven’t spoken to you in a while, and I am sorry for that, but I just want to thank you for giving me Emily, and even Marie and Sora, although I haven’t met them yet. Thank you for sending me here, and please continue to guide me as I start my journey of self-discovery. I welcome every gift you are willing to give me and promise to serve you in every way I can.
I finished my prayer and realized the weight in my chest already felt so much lighter. I really should talk to the Goddess more and seek peace within her love. As I started to unpack my things, the craziest thing happened. I swear, I heard the Goddess reply.
You are welcome, my daughter. I love you, just as I love all my other children. Value Emily, your friends, and your support system. The decision to place them in your path was not made lightly. Trust in them, and you can eventually learn to love and trust yourself. Many blessings from the moon and the stars to you, Lyla, my precious daughter…
