Queen Bee

"Annie!!" She turned to face me with a puzzled expression. “What?” “Remember when we talked about avoiding trouble this final year? You said we are in this together and we high-fived each other, and you pretty much know how much of a troublemaker Skylar is. You know our history with her, so we don't want her running out last year at Corinth college.” Annie snorted. “Doesn't mean we'd just stand here and let her talk s**t about us.” I sighed. “Look, let's just get the hell out of withhere. The first bell will go any moment from now.” “Yeah, you're right.” With one last scowl at Skylar's direction, We'dAnnie gripped my wrist and pulled me forward towards our first class — Public Journalism. I had an inkling that Skylar would never let us off so easily, and I hated that I was right. hardly walked a few meters when she slipped into place, blocking our way. "In a hurry, Miss Heartbreaker and her belligerent side kick?” “Leave us alone, Skylar. We want nothing to do with your tantrums. We know you love the drama.” I glared at her. She cackled, clapping her hands together and drawing the attention of a few freshers passing by. ”And you don't? If so, why then did you break up with Jack? That too publicly? If you didn't want drama, you could've accepted his proposal and then rejected it privately.” “So this is what this is about?” I looked her over, folding my arms over my chest. “Since when did you care so much about Jack? And what exactly is your business in all of this? Don't go scouting for trouble where there's none, Skylar.” “Don't go scouting for trouble where there's none, Skylar,” Skylar mimicked with a cackle. I glanced at Annie who rolled her eyes. “If you really wanted to make you and Jack's issue private, you shouldn't have rejected his proposal in front of the entire school. But you did, and that makes it my business. Get that into your f*****g head.” The bell would go any moment from now, and Skylar wasn't backing down. It was getting infuriating, and I was losing my patience. c*****g my head to the side, I exhaled, and asked. “You done? Thank you. Come on Annie, let's go.” I hooked my arm up with Annie's, pulling her forward with me. “Hey!” I yelled when Skylar clamped a hand around my bag strap, pulling me back roughly. Annie tried to fight her off, but Skylar was faster, twisting away just in time, and causing Annie to tumble down to the ground. Skylar pulled my bag away and threw it to the floor. A fair crowd had now gathered around us, the air buzzing with excited conversation as they all watched. “Are you okay?” I bent to help Annie up. She nodded, taking my hand, and rising up. Her knee had rammed the tiled floor hard, and was already starting to swell. “Just a sprain, but I'll be fine.” “Should we go to the school nurse?” I suggested. She shook her head. “No. Really, I'll be fine. That's not necessary.” “You don't go anywhere until I say so, fools,” Skylar raged. Out of the corners of my eyes, I caught Annie tightening her fist, her face taut with anger. She took a step forward, to punch Skylar, but I held her back. “Annie, no!” “Leave me alone! It's time someone put her in her goddamn place!” “Control yourself. She's not worth it.” Skylar made a face. “Oh, Annie wants to fight, I'm scared. Oh, she's going to hurt me so bad, I wish I was already dead,” she laughed. “You two can't do more than a house fly's perch. You can't touch me. I'll bury you. Make your life miserable.” Before I could stop her, Annie rushed forward and delivered a hard smack on Skylar's forehead. The queen bee stumbled backwards in shock, her left palm flying out to cover her face. I caught Annie's hand before she could strike again. “Annie! Stop!” “How dare you!” Skylar howled, turning red like a rottening tomato. She glanced around, the buzz all over dying down as everyone waited with bated breath for her to explode. For her to do something. But tyrants like Skylar never lifted a finger to defend themselves. Instead, they got their cronies to do the dirty work of wiping their arses for them. McPherson. “Are you going to sit there and let these losers treat me like s**t? Fight for me, idiots!” Jeanette charged at us first, slapping Annie hard. Instead of trying to intervene, everyone moved back, to give us enough space to fight. Annie grabbed Eleanor's hair, pulling hard, but Britney was swift to kick her hurting knee. “Diana,” Annie called calmly as she fell down. Dazed, I rushed to help her, but Skylar signalled Jeannette and Eleanor to hold me. They held me back on either wrists. “Let me go. I'm sorry, Skylar,” the dam finally burst, and the tears came falling hard. This was all my fault. Annie in pains... Skylar terrorizing us...it was all my fault. “You should have known better than encouraging your friend to hit me,” she blew at her nails, a devious glint in her eyes as she edged closer, her right hand raised in the air. I closed my eyes, waiting for her to strike me. I was ready. As long as she left Annie and I alone I was ready for whatever humiliation technique she deemed fit. My heart pounded wildly against my ribcage, my body on fire. Five minutes passed by, yet I hadn't felt anything yet. I opened my left eye a c***k, and lost my breath.
