The moon in its fullness illuminated the forest; its silvery glow guided Adolf as he navigated through the underbrush. Each of his steps was a struggle against the beast that was within him. His fists were tightly clenched, his nails were digging into his palms. It was a constant reminder of the creature who wants to escape. The wind howled greatly around him. It brought the familiar aromas of pine and the earth, but something else was beckoning to him. Valeria.
Her scent was warm and enticing. It wafted through the air, awakening a deep longing within him. His heart raced fast, and his wolf stirred with much restlessness. It urged him to pursue the scent and to discover the owner of the smell, but Adolf knew the weight of destiny. He realized that it could only mean that she was his mate.
He stopped, the moonlight reflected in his eyes. The memories of the past pain, betrayal, and his loss surged back. It overwhelmed him. He could not let himself be with her. He could not bear the cost of being vulnerable again. The mate bond?
Yet, as her scent got thicker, he felt an irresistible pull in his chest towards her. Clenching his jaw helplessly, he shook his head and pressed on. He was now determined to follow the trail.
Valeria stood at the edge of the forest. the wind was playfully tugging at her dark hair. She had been following the path which her instincts had guided her through, her heart had been racing so fast with excitement. Something deep was beckoning her. It was a sensation which she had never experienced before. It was an intense, yearning pull that resonated deep within her being.
She was not so sure of who or what was waiting for her, but her instincts told her that it was him, her mate. The one she had unknowingly been waiting for her entire life.
As she moved forward, she saw him. He was tall and commanding, his presence was as striking as the moon above Adolf.
Valeria's heart was filled with flutters of emotion as their eyes locked, and for a brief moment it seemed as if the world around them had dissolved. There was silence, none of them moved, they were both enveloped in the weight of the moment.
Adolf's expression changed with his recognition of her. Valeria felt a wave of warmth go through her, then she opened her mouth to speak, but before she could speak a word, he took a step backward; His face had hardened into an unreadable mask.
“No,” he growled, the word cutting through the air between them.
Valeria blinked in a confused state. “What do you mean by saying no?”
“I mean it, no,” he insisted coldly, his voice lacking any form of warmth. “You are not my mate.”
Valeria’s heart sank into her belly. His words struck her like a physical blow, and she stumbled back in disbelief. “What? How can you say that? The bond.
There is no bond, Adolf quickly interrupted her, his eyes flashing with something dark. You do not understand, but it is not going to happen. I am not your mate.”
She moved forward, she really felt desperate for him to clarify her. We are meant for each other. I have never felt anything like this in my entire life, this connection, the pull is so intense that I can not shake it off.
He snapped at her sharply, and with bitterness in his voice," You are not my mate, and I won't allow it."
Why? Valeria's voice trembled as she struggled to remain calm. "Why won't you let us be together?"
He clenched his fists, his jaw was tight, as if he was holding back something wild. There was pain in his eyes, but he quickly hid it. Because I am not weak enough to fall for some fairy tale. I have seen what the mate bond can do. I've witnessed the destruction it causes."
Valeria moved closer to him, her heart was aching at the honesty in his words. Our bond will not cause us any form of destruction. What happened to you, Adolf? Why do you want to push me away?
You don't know anything about me. I am not who you think I am. I will not be the kind of person that you want me to be.
I want you to be yourself. Valeria spoke softly, her voice was so vulnerable. I want you yourself. I have never felt like this before. The bond is so strong, don't you feel it too?
His eyes widened, and at that instant she glimpsed what he was trying to hide for a moment, but it disappeared at once.
I don't need a mate that will try to hold me back. I don't want someone to ruin all the things I have worked for. His voice was raw with emotion. I have seen mates that tear themselves apart. I have seen wolves who lose their freedom and identity. I have seen it all, Valeria. I will not make it happen to me.
Valeria's throat felt thick as she tried to hold back tears. I am not going to tear you apart. I will not destroy you. I just want to be with you, Adolf. I want to be your partner.
"You will not understand," Adolf muttered, his eyes filled with turmoil. He said," I don’t need anyone now or ever. Then he turned away from her, his body was stiff and full of tension.
But she was not going to let him go that easily. He can not go without answers, he must explain the reason for his actions to her.
She moved closer to him, Adolf please.
He paused but he did not look at her. I have made my choice, Valeria. I will not go against it.
Her heart did a somersault. I do not believe you.
He suddenly turned around to face her, his eyes were blazing with intensity, the wild side of him was just beneath the surface. Do you think i will change my mind because of you? That you can make me believe in some silly bond that is not real? You are mistaken.”
She shook her head, and moved closer to him, her voice shaking with feeling. I know what I feel. I understand what this is all about. You will not push me away. I will not go without a fight.”
The expression on his face darkened even more, his fists clenched. You are making a big mistake.”
"You are the one that is making a big mistake," she whispered, stepping even closer.
He breathed deeply as he looked at her intently. Briefly, it was just both of us that stood under the moonlight, their connection was like electricity. His heart raced fast, he wanted to take her, to accept what was meant to be.
But then he spoke out loud," I don’t need this," he muttered. He turned away from her again. I don’t need you.
Valeria felt her heart shatter into pieces, yet she would not give up on her mate.
"I will not leave you," she shouted in a determined voice.
Her words stopped Adolf, the tension he felt was evident in his shoulders.
Then let us see who will leave who. It is not finished.
With those words, he moved into the darkness. Valeria stood alone with a heavy heart under the full moon.
