Luna's POV
I entered Hudson's office, bracing myself for whatever lay ahead.
"Good morning, Hudson," I greeted.
"You're ten seconds late," he replied, glancing up briefly.
I opened my mouth to respond, but he cut me off.
"Do you realize what can happen in ten seconds? A criminal could evade justice, a life could be lost due to delayed intervention. In just ten seconds, everything can change," he said, his tone intense and his complexion reddening. This reaction seemed to stem from something deeper than my slight tardiness—perhaps linked to the 'Ella' his mother had mentioned I think .
"Are you even listening?" he snapped, jolting me from my thoughts.
"Yes," I lied.
"From now on, it's 'Mr. Carter,'" he stated firmly.
"Trying to be professional, huh?" I attempted to lighten the mood.
"I don't tolerate unprofessionalism," he retorted coldly.
"Let's get to work," I replied, matching his tone.
"There's no need," he said dismissively.
"What do you mean? As the lead detective assigned to this case, I can't sit back and let a lawyer do my job. Your role, Mr. Carter, is to interpret the law; mine is to find those who break it," I asserted.
"See, I know—" he began, but I interrupted.
"Mr. Carter, I'd like to review the evidence you've gathered," I said evenly.
"Luna, what are you doing?" he asked, clearly puzzled by my change in demeanor.
"Now you're being unprofessional, and I won't accept that," I said, maintaining an unreadable expression.
"I mean, Miss Blackwood, what are you doing?" he rephrased.
"My job," I replied.
"Look, I don't know what you're getting at, but—" he started, and again, I cut him off.
"Mr. Carter," I said, stepping closer and gently removing his hands from the papers. I picked them up and began examining them carefully. "This is a murder case where the wrong person was convicted, correct?" He remained silent, so I continued. "According to these documents, the case is over a year old and has been reopened. Hopefully, we can uncover something useful; a year is ample time for the real murderer to cover their tracks."
He still didn't respond.
"Well, I'll take these to study and will share my findings tomorrow. I'll officially begin work on the case then. Thank you, Mr. Carter, for your cooperation. It's a pleasure to have you as a partner in this endeavor. I trust the victim and others deeply affected by this incident will finally receive justice and perhaps find peace." I gave a slight bow and walked out with the papers. Now, it's time to find justice and prove Hudson wrong.
