Chapter Five. Oh God what have I done? My mam is going to be furious. Maybe I should go home. I mean, I don’t have a clue where I can go! As I walk down the street, pulling my cases behind me, which leads away from my parent’s huge house in Whitburn, I am second guessing my decision to stand up for myself. However, I am not a little girl running away from home, so I refuse to turn back after three whole minutes of being on my own. I pass one of the other big houses around here, where those who have more money than the average person resides. I see the wife of Anders Maxwell, a CEO and multi-millionaire of a group of companies, walking onto the driveway. She is a fire-fighter, Josie, I think her name is, as she bundles her gorgeous child into the back of her car on the long gravelled drive which leads to the doorway to her home, where her husband, who is someone who passed my parents test of who or, who is not good to know, because he is a big shot stands looking at her as if she is the only person in the world. Okay, I sound like a romantic novel, but it is true. I could only wish to have someone look at me in that way, and not with contempt laced with jealousy for the perfect life people perceive I live and know nothing of my struggles. I guess compared to a lot of people, my life is perfect. I should be grateful, not acting so spiteful. Maybe I should go back. No, I cannot return home. Not yet. My mother needs to realise I am serious and maybe cut me some slack. I mean to be able to go out with my cousins once a week is not a crime, is it? I know Kit is a bit of a ‘wide boy’, with his motorcycles, tattoos, and having a different girl on his arm every other day, but he has always been kind to me. Neither him, nor Amy. had treated me badly, they have always been friendly. They may well be the ‘black sheep’ of the family, and my mother may complain how they are a disgrace to my Aunty, my mother’s older sister. But to me, they have been nothing but supportive and kind. Maybe I could go to Aunt Marcie’s, she is really nice to me. Where my mother is proud, her elder sister is the opposite. She has no false pride, she accepts everyone as they are, and has no problem calling my mother out on her behaviour. However, I know that Kit and Amy’s mother, will be the first person my mother rings, and I really want to sort this out on my own. Just to prove to myself that I can. I trundle down the long road, turning to where the small shops are located, and see a taxi waiting at the side of the road. Yes, I am going to do this myself. Even if I only stay away for a couple of nights before returning home, my point will be made. I smile at the driver as he grabs my cases from me, placing it in the boot of his car. I settle myself inside, thankful that this time the seatbelt works. “Airport?” he asks as I shake my head. “No thank you. Erm, the nearest hotel please,” I say to him, and a look of disappointment crosses his face, because the fayre is going to be a lot less than he envisaged. He turns his head back looking at the road ahead before pulling out of the bay and heading off on the short journey to the sea front, to an area of the city called Seaburn. I pay the taxi driver, as he pulls up outside the Seaburn Hotel, on the sea front of my home city. Then grabbing my cases I head inside, making my way directly to the reception desk. The lady behind the counter gives me a polite smile, and I find myself returning the gesture. “May I have a room please?” I politely ask, as she nods her head, her fingers moving like lightening on the keyboard of her computer, before she looks up at me. “I have a double available, or a twin?” she asks with a raised eyebrow. “Oh, which ever is easiest for you,” I smiled, my usual lack of confidence raising its ugly head. “Both the same to me. The cost is the same as well. How many nights are you wanting to stay?” she asks looking at my large suitcase. “Erm… I am unsure,” I say, because I am not. “Well, how about I book you in for two nights, as it works out only twenty pounds more than just one. We will take a 140 pounds deposit, then open up a tab and check you out when you decide to leave,” she kindly suggests to me. That sounds good to me. I hand over my bank card, as she swipes it into the machine, before handing it over to me for my pin code. I punch in the numbers, and the white receipt spits out from underneath. “If you could let us know before nine am if you are wanting to remain on the day of your departure,” she tells me, and I bob my head. “Your tab is open now. Just charge everything to your room. You are on the fourth floor, room 419. I put you in the double, extra bed space,” she smiles, as I once again nod my head. After some brief instructions on where to go, I head to the lift and press the button for the fourth floor. Now I have somewhere to stay, I feel a lot better. I enter the room, which is nice enough. Not as posh as the hotels my parents insist we say at, but it is clean, tidy, and some might say, expensive. Not that I am judging. Not at all, just copying what my mother would say. Maybe I need to stop doing that. I lift my case onto the bed, and grab my clothes, beginning to hang them up. I mean for a couple of nights, I don’t see the point, but old habits die hard, and for all I am rebelling, I find myself doing exactly what my parents would expect of me. I am just loading the drawers with my night clothes and underwear when my mobile phone bursts into life. Sighing, I go to retrieve it from my handbag, my shoulders tense, as I presume it is my mother, demanding I return home. My muscles, however, relax when I see it is Amy. calling me again. “Hello,” I answer as my cousin giggles down the phone. “You f*****g rock star! You did it. You escaped,” she says sounding like she was congratulating me on winning the lottery or something. “Erm, yeah. I kind of walked out an hour or so ago,” I tell my cousin, as I sit on the bed, wondering what I am going to do with my time at the hotel. “Yeah, I know. Your mam has been on the phone to mine. I was in the room, and Aunty Jayne is not a happy control freak. Anyway. I am supposed to find out where you are. I am not going to tell them though. I am going to say that you refused to tell me. So, if you do refuse then that is okay. If you do tell me though, then that information is between you and me. I will not even mention it to Kit. Not that he would grass you up. But I have got your back hun. So, first things first, are you safe?” Amy asks me. “Yes, I am at the Seaburn Hotel, I have booked in for a couple of nights,” I tell her, because I know that she will keep to her word. She may be another ‘wild child’ as my mother referred to her, but she is trustworthy, and the closest thing I have ever had to a friend. “Cool. Hey, tell me to f**k off if you want. But do you fancy some company?” Amy asks, and well, yes, I actually do. Even if it is only to keep me from going back home before the two nights, I have set myself to stay away, are up. “Yeah, sure,” I say, not ‘yes of course you may join me’, as my mother would have corrected my answer. “Great, I will ride over in about an hour, and I will bring a bottle of vodka, because we are going to celebrate your new back bone and bid for freedom in style,” my cousin states, as I widen my eyes. I don’t know how Amy has the courage to ride a motorbike, but she does, all the time, along with Kit, and swears it is the best way to travel. It is not for me, I would be far too terrified I would come off, or a car wouldn’t see me and turn me into an organ doner. Also, I am unsure about the vodka, after last night! Yes I enjoyed the feeling of alcohol fuelled confidence, but the headache and vomiting this morning, was not something I would put on my ‘to do list’ any time soon. But to have some company. Yes, I am definitely down for that. I am presuming that she will stay the night with me, as drinking and riding is not something I have ever known either her or Kit do. Honestly, if she does come to the hotel and stay’s this will be my first ever sleep over with either a friend, or my cousin. To be honest, I am a little bit excited about it. I hope she does stay, I think it will be fun.
