**The Alpha's Burden**

665 Words
Zane was sitting outside by the training grounds when Ember finally approached him. The morning sun was barely breaking through the trees, casting long shadows across the dew-covered grass. His gaze was distant, as though he had been waiting for something he knew was inevitable but didn’t quite know how to handle. He knew Ember was conflicted. He saw it in the way she carried herself, the way she looked at him—like he was both the one thing she wanted and the one thing she feared. And Zane couldn’t blame her for that. After all, he had given her every reason to doubt him, every reason to question whether he could truly be what she needed. But he wouldn’t run from this. He couldn’t. As she drew closer, his wolf stirred, sensing the change in her, the shift that had begun within her heart. The distance was closing between them, but it was still fragile. Zane stood as she came to him, the wind blowing through her hair, the scent of lavender and cedar sharp in the morning air. "You came," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. Ember nodded, her eyes avoiding his for a moment, but then, with a quiet exhale, she looked at him. Her eyes were still filled with doubt, but there was something else in them—something softer, something that told Zane she was willing to listen. "I can’t do this alone," she said quietly, her voice almost breaking. "I need to know what this is, Zane. I need to know that you really see me. Not just as some obligation. Not just because of the Goddess’s plan. But because you *want* me. *Because of me.*" Zane’s heart clenched in his chest, his wolf aching at her words. The pull between them was overwhelming, but Ember’s voice, filled with such raw vulnerability, shook him more than anything else. "I do want you," he said, his voice low and unwavering. "I want you, Ember. I’ve always wanted you. But I was too stupid to realize it. I was too busy chasing the wrong things, the wrong people. I know I can’t erase the past, but I will show you every single day that I’m worthy of your trust. Worthy of you." Ember stared at him, her lips parted as though she was trying to decide whether to believe him. Zane could see the struggle in her eyes. She wanted to believe him. He could feel it in her wolf, in the way her scent had shifted when she spoke to him. She was fighting herself—fighting the fear of what it meant to surrender, to accept the bond they shared. "I don’t want to be your Luna just because I’m your mate, Zane," Ember said, her voice firm now, though it still held that tremor of doubt. "I want to be your Luna because you *see* me. Because you want me. Not just because it’s written in some prophecy, not because it’s expected of you." Zane stepped closer, gently cupping her face in his hands. His heart thundered in his chest, but there was a quiet calm in his soul. This was what they needed—this was the truth they had both been avoiding. "I see you, Ember," he whispered. "I see you more clearly than I ever have before. And I don’t care what the Goddess’s plan is. I care about what *we* build together. You and me. I will wait for you. I will fight for you, every single day, if that’s what it takes. Because you’re *worth* it." Ember’s breath hitched in her throat as Zane’s words wrapped around her like a lifeline. The walls inside her heart cracked just a little more. For the first time, she felt something real—something not driven by duty, not driven by the bond, but by the man standing in front of her. And maybe, just maybe, she could finally let herself believe. ---
